Sat for 10 years

So my rex sat for 10 years before it was started up recently. and ive noticed now that it is harder to start up than usual (possibly because of cold weather, 30 degrees), i have to have somebody working the gas and choke in the engine bay when starting it up to get it running, but once its running, it will stay running. do i need to get a tune up done to rex? and if so, should i look for a rotary specialist in my area?

My '83 has been sitting for 5 years and before attempting to start it, I'm doing the following:

1. Drain and replace all critical fluids: oil, coolant, brake fluid. I need to replace the clutch master cylinder so that will get new Dot 3 as well.
2. Replace the plugs, distributor cap, rotor, coils and the plug wires.
3. Drain and replace the gas.
4. Rebuild the carb although that's probably a little compulsive. A good cleaning should suffice.
5. Grease all the fittings.

I think that a 6 pack of Yuengling Lager is a good pairing for this job.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, then by all means take it to a specialist and have them do this which basically is a major tune up.

Good luck!

ive done all of those besides rebuild the carb. i know that the engine is getting gas though because when i pull out the plugs sometimes theyre wet and the engine has flooded already.

Are you letting the car warm up completely before starting to drive?
If the plugs are wet, then the carb could be set too rich. You might want to try leaning it to see what happens.

food7373 01-18-10 10:29 AM

what do you mean by leaning? like tilting the car? im probably gonna get the carb rebuilt or do it my self. its a mikuni. and in warmer weather it starts up alot easier. im gonna pull the plugs too and crank it to make sure the engine isnt flooded.

"Leaning" refers to adjusting the fuel/air mixture so that you are delivering less fuel as a ratio of fuel/air to the engine. When a carb is running "rich" it is delivering more fuel and when running "lean" it is delivering less fuel. I'm just getting back into working on my RX-7 so I'm not real familiar "yet" with tuning the carb.

you might wanna just try setting the idle mixture, if you havent. if you're really picky, its slightly different in the summer vs winter.

you don't wanna warm the motor up too much before driving, especially with the choke, all you're doing is putting gas in the oil

can't believe u actually thought that. since the car has sat for that long, the carb will definitely need a rebuild to clean out all the varnish. is the choke and gas pedal not hooked up in the car the reason someone has to be under the hood working them?

food7373 01-18-10 01:57 PM

no, everything is hooked up, just not strong as they should be. where culd i get a carb rebuilt or where could i get a manual to do it myself?

Carb rebuild kits can be bought from many sources, from Mazda dealers to online outfits. JUST DON'T ASK rxtasy3 to refer you somewhere!

A Haynes manual would be a good investment and will walk you through the steps. As rxtasy3 said, it's important to clean the gunk out so when you pull the carb, it's a good idea to soak it in a tub of carb cleaner before you begin the rebuild. Just wear rubber gloves, that stuff is very corrosive and toxic.

Or, just take it to a local Mazda tech who can easily do the job.

food7373 01-18-10 02:14 PM

it isnt a stock carb though. i have a haynes manual also, i will check from the manufactuer of the carb and see if they have a carb rebuild manual, and if not, i will for somewhere to take it.

Damn! I had a 81 that sat for too long too. Like what the other guys said. Go through the car make sure everything is good and rebuild the carb. Buy yourself a manual for the carb, do some FUCKING RESEARCH and you'll be set! Its annoying when members start threads about stupid shit. Everything besides info on the carb is in the FAQ section. Good Luck with your carb and hopefully you'll gain some common sense along the way bro. I dont mean to sound like a prick, but this subject has been beaten to death so its frustrating when every thread is the same questions...

I went to Ebay punched in mikuni got over 505 items. Including carbs, jets, rebuild kits and a manual. On youtube theres a few videos on them but nothing useful. Installer67 has a thread with a bunch of info on webers, it will at least help you understand how 2 barrels work and the diagrams might be useful to you. All this info only took me 3 minutes to gather. Now you have no excuse if it seems like too much like other members have stated just pay someone else to perform the work. Good Luck

u'll probably have to learn to do the rebuild urself. doubtfull u'll find a shop that knows anything about carbs since everything's FI now.

food7373 01-18-10 06:33 PM

Hey! What's the problem? Short term memory loss? Substance abuse? Or do you just have too much time on your hands and find it amusing to screw around here? This is from one of your earlier posts:

"its a mikuni." That's a carb. And I don't mean pasta.

Jibaro 12A 01-18-10 08:02 PM

^ LOL! Im telling the guy seems like a total :jerkit: I looked up Mikuni's and found a ton of info in just 3 minutes. I think he is either fucking around or just plain dumb.

jinxed4dub 01-19-10 12:43 AM

he doesn't know what model of carb it is. I think he knows its a mikuni. but I don't know shit about those carbs. maybe there's only 1 mikuni carb, and they got big just off that 1 bad ass carb IDK. but you don't need to insult the guy. I've abused substances and have had my share of short term memory. and I understood what he was saying. his grammar isn't the best, but who's is. certainly not mine.

food7373 01-19-10 10:06 AM

yah, they dont make car carbs anymore so its kinda hard to find info bout their old ones and a rebuild kit. and i dont care bout my gramar, im not typing an english essay here, haha.

Hey Food, Maybe there have been some harsh, unkind things said here but you need to step back and look at this in context. First of all, I'm going to guess that you're 16 or 17 years old. If so, glad to see you working on cars. If not, and you are an adult, then you should be able to figure this yourself. So quit bothering us.

The main issue here is that you don't seem to be doing much proactively to get the information that you need. It took about 5 seconds for me to locate the Mikuni factory web site. From there, you can find out all kinds of info about the carb, parts and availability. As a last resort, send them a direct message asking for help. We're not talking rocket science here, just common sense.

Finally, grammar does matter.

Oh, and welcome to the forum... and life in general.
