Reusing my 12A Irons
I need a set of 12A Irons for my 4Port 13B engine. I have a set from my original 12A, but it was overheated once or twice (115k miles). How do I determine if they will yeild a reliable lasting engine if i reuse them? The car never leaked coolant or smoked, the overheating was due to a thermostat problem. It seemed to run fine afterwards. Since the irons can be resurfaced, I am assuming that the only problems to look for are cracking and warping. How do I check for these things myself?

The irons arent what usually gets damaged from overheating, its the rotorhousings that warp. You can check the FSM for the procedure using a straight edge and a feeler gauge.

Yeah, that makes sense now that i think about it, the IRONS are iron so should take alot more heat abuse than aluminum, duh. lol :) I dont have an FSM, ill have to hunt around for my haynes.

ok found the procedure for checking for warpage in the haynes manual, what about cracking? any way to test them myself when they are dissassembled?
|
cracking? look for deep scratches.
|
deep scratches ha ha. what about cracks that arent visible - out of sight or to small to find just looking it over

Doubt it. Ive never seen cracks in them. Theres an online FSM www.rotaryrefs.net , www.iluvmyrx7.com Also Kevin Wright has one over at wankel.net somewhere.

Let me know if you need anything from my 79 engine. OH Carl! I PM'd you about a ton of carb parts I have, and need to get rid of.
|
ok, ill just inspect for visual cracks, and ill pick up a straight edge and feeler guage tommorow, the rest i will leave to the rotary gods. thanks for the info guys

I reused a set of irons from an overheated engine. The coolant seals leaked and the rotor housings got crushed. The irons are now in my daily driver and they're fine.
