Progress on my car. WIth pics :D

5 Attachment(s)
Well I'm back at it again, I know that I haven't posted up here in a while about updates on my car so here it goes.

I flew down to Scotts place (Trochoid) since he hasn't been feeling too well to help him out a bit with my shell, powder coating, and prepping those 2 tanks. The pictures go from the start of prepping the shell really to getting up on the uhaul and me dropping it off at my painters place which is where it rests right now. I've also go all my powder coated mocked up in there, along with the ITB in place too. This will help me determine hose length and what not before I get the painted shell back so all I have to do is really just transfer everything and not mock things up. I might also try to get it running or even just atleast a bit to maybe drive it to the my bbuddys shop instead of towing it there.

Anyways to the pictures :D

That is amazing! Great work on the 7. Hope Trochoid feels better.

trochoid 10-10-07 02:06 AM

Thanks for the hoping but my back is toast. Heavy pain killers and muscle relaxers don't even help some days. Spent half the summer on the couch which put me behind on work and cash flow. If anyone is looking for some powdercoating, PM me, I could use the work.

Origional sale pics are in this thread, shows the restoration of of the underbody and engine bay.

https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/prepped-85-gsl-shell-progress-553071/

Sam was a great help finishing up the extra work he wanted done. I let him at it, he finished up some of the needed body smoothing and spraying the epoxy and primer. He picked it up quickly, he's a quiet, sharp young man.

He has a good deal of work ahead of him swapping all of the parts from his rusting body to the shell, but I'm confident he can accomplish it.

Dan_s_young 10-10-07 08:15 AM

You guys got alot done there. Awesome work, alot of work prepping that car but it should turn out awesome!

Sam, you need to get a photobucket account, 10 posts of your pictures later. Your post count is really adding up (cheat codes I say! haha).

82transam 10-10-07 08:51 AM

Good work guys, brings back memories of a few weeks ago doing my own body work... ugh. Can't wait to see it together!

Directfreak 10-10-07 09:03 AM

I am jealous of Trochoid's Garage setup - partcularly that "pit".

mazdaverx713b 10-10-07 09:49 AM

you guys did a lot of great work there!!! Scott, sorry to hear about your back. any news on a recovery time or any surgery that could help?

dj55b 10-10-07 10:28 AM

Thanks for all the compliments guys, Ya I really should do a photobucket or something ... or a car domain maybe or something.

I was debating where to leave the engine bay black or to paint it the same color as the car and and have decided to do it the same color as the car now. I've been told it just gives it a more professional look.

I can't wait to get all those red and blue fitting on the car :D along with all that SS stuff. Should be a sharp looking engine bay.

If you guys have any suggestions about doing something different, please keep them coming. At the end of my whole build up, I do have plans to try to score a couple of magazines hopefully to be featured in to help raise up brownie point for the First gen community and hopefully trying to keep on increasing the value of these little great cars. I might send them a teaser feature once the shell is painted and I have the FI setup going, and then release them a full issue of the full build with the Supercharger, and upgraded brakes and what not.

dj55b 10-10-07 02:15 PM

btw, for the people that haven't seen it, or just plain forgot the color that it will be painted is very very similar to this :

kgray 10-17-07 03:07 PM

Nice to see the car coming together! You two sure did a lot of work done.
I still absolutely LOVE that powder.

twinkletoes 10-17-07 04:08 PM

keep up the good work man, coming along great..pray you get better trochoid

dj55b 10-17-07 08:53 PM

thanks for the compliments guys, I have done a bit more work since I last updated this. This includes:

90% of the engine bay bolt and under side of the car are now stainless steel
The Gas tank is in
All AN hose line already made
Return hard line 1/2 done ... still gotta do the rest. Bending those inshape are fun
Elderbrock AN fuel filter
Talked to Billy from ReSpeed and he will be powder coating my Rack and Pinion same green as the rest

bunch of other little things here and there but I'll post up pictures hopefully tonight

Well i guess time for those update pictures. You will note that I'm using all the stock second gen intank pump stuff as in low light, fuel level sender and stuff. Was raining most of the day today so couldn't finish my hard lines yet. Still gotta fabricate a way to hook up my throttle cable too.

mazdaverx713b 10-19-07 01:46 AM

absolutely amazing!! great work!!!

dj55b 10-19-07 12:14 PM

I hate working in the fall ... weather so unpredictable ... still need to get my hard lines done. Plus one of the fittings that came in yesterday was the wrong one. Ordered 3 billet aluminum hose seperator so the hoses don't scratch up my paint when the fuel vibrates through them. Also added another thing with my rack and pinion from billy, and that's his outer tie rod end. Also did the black dragon order (For all the new window clips, rubbers and stuff) Should be doing the 1A auto order today for my carpet door seals

dj55b 10-19-07 02:37 PM

Forgot to add, I also bought a second gen oil cooler to mount in there also.

82transam 10-25-07 10:29 AM

Sounds like your getting there, it might be a photo finish to see which one of us finishes our money pits first ;)

dj55b 10-25-07 10:45 AM

At the pace you're going ... looks like I'll be there first :P My shell will be out of the paint booth on November the 1st or 2nd, after that its going straight to my buddies shop so that I can do the engine, and all the driveterrain swap there. Its easier when you can put both shell up in the air at the same time, and I'm hoping to get a crew of about 4 people to help me out put everything from one shell to the other to get it done as quick as possible. You're my motive now :D

82transam 10-25-07 11:19 AM

We'll see... I'm in no rush so you might be first. But my thread hasn't been updated in a while. the body is complete assembled, as well as most of the interior, so now its all front suspension, steering, brakes and fine tuning the engine.... I'll have to post some pics to make you jealous ;) Plus don't forget I did everything on mine with my own two hands, other than a little bit of advice from a few people here and there I did it all, so with all those helpers you'd better be done first :D

dj55b 10-25-07 12:34 PM

Lol... Ya I still have to assemble the whole inside, and I have to play around with the MS to get it up and running :D The only thing that I haven't done by myself so far is the actualy paint, I did most of the body shell prep as Scott's back wasn't the greatest. He just mostly showed me how its done. As for the helpers, It might be me, my buddy that owns the shop, Immanuel (Martin), and Orion84gsl (Chris).

Making use of my forum members lol.

orion84gsl 10-25-07 03:13 PM

Make sure you let me know when your ready to do the assembly, I'll try to schedule work around it, that way I'm useful for a decent amount of time. Now I can help you with your car, instead of the other way around.

redbstd 10-25-07 10:18 PM

I know this is a nub question. But I cant seem to find that throttle body dj is running. By the way, I searched in case anyone else wants to bitch. What ecu will you be running etc. etc. etc.

looking good, dj55b! looking damn good.

dj55b 10-26-07 06:27 PM

Thanks,

A few more updates from today:

1) Trying to find supplier that has the Damplifier sound proofing from second skin, but everyone just seems to carry Damplifier Pro and I might just be suckered to pay the price for it because I need this as soons as possible.

2) I've Started my skeleton battery case, for the battery relocation.

3) Still missing a couple of capacitors for finishing the MS to finish putting in there the LM1815.

4) If the rain stops early, I'll be down under the car with the hack saw to cut off my header from the whole welded back. Makes me wish I hadn't done it like so. Oh well you learn from your mistakes. But once thats out, I have to drill the holes for the egt probes, and also I need to wrap the header still. I love the look of a wrapped header .. just gives it a mean edge, but abviously I don't do it for the looks only,

5) Clean up the garage so that I can maybe fit the car in there lol. Anyone that has a single car garage knows what I'm talking about.

Also I did finish the fuel system, just waiting on my Billet Specialties hose seperators:

I'll post up more pictures once they're in.

im completely speechless. and good luck trochoid!

Sorry to hear about your back Scott, let me know if I can do anything to help.

Thanks, those are badass i was thinking abot running a weber but now...he, he, he. no way

dj55b 10-27-07 04:12 PM

Things can add up quickly depending mostly on the stand alone you get, they start from 250$ for the Megasquirt which you have to solder all the components on yourself and modify, to who knows how much for the latest haltech and stuff. You also need to add sensors to work with the standalone, Wideband for better tuning, EGT to get the ultimate tuning when you pair them together. And lastly if you can do everything yourself or if you have to hire someone to set it up. And not to mention tuning, to really get the most you need one of the better tuners to do so. YOu can loose HP if not tuned porperly and it has been seen time over time.

Not trying to scare you just trying to warn you whats all about to come.

redbstd 10-28-07 01:40 AM

Not to worried about price, just the complexity of the stand alone. What type/brand of sensors are you using, if you dont mind me asking. Also are there any drawbacks to using the microsquirt other than the price, and what sensors exactly do i need to run to the ecu. So far i got Pyrometer, air intake temp, coolant temp, wideband, tps, and map.

dj55b 10-30-07 09:10 AM

I'm using the GM sensors as thats what the MS is made to work with, but really you can make any sensor work. DIYautotune.com sell those sensor as well as the MS. The only 2 sensors really would be the intake air temp sensor, and the coolant sensor, which you already have anyways. Also the kit already come with a 2.5 Map sensor. That is more than enough for any NA, they also sell 4 bar if you want to get above 20 ish PSI if you go boosted later on.

Also forgot to add in there, Billy, just sent me pictures of my powdercoated front cross member. Not the greatest pictures, but I can tell its the color :D Green all the way :D

dj55b 10-30-07 12:17 PM

Some more updates for today, Talked to my painter (classicjoe), he said he'll be uploading some pictures of the shell sometime today, still not done just so you know. Also just received my Black Dragon Order (love how the box still sayd Victoria British though). Still waiting on alot more packages to come in.

Well looks like today is being a productful day after all. I cut off my headers to start recleaning them before wrapping them with the Wrap. Also Should be drilling in the holes for the EGT probes in there hopefully today.

And If anyone cares to know, my headers weight 8lb. I was curious myself so just to let you all know what they weight.

dj55b 10-30-07 04:46 PM

well finished basically all my header stuff. I've got the EGT probes in there, the O2 heat sink from Innovate, the header wrap. And now I have to run to work lol.

Dan_s_young 10-30-07 05:11 PM

Making good progress Sam, wonder who is going to finish there project first?

dj55b 10-31-07 01:45 AM

With me knowing how much work you have left on your car, I think i'll beat you to it. :D

My shell should of had the paint coat on there today, Joe must of been busy and couldn't post up the pictures, but tomorrow should be clear coat time, and thursday should be block sanding, and even buffing the paint. The shell should be up for pick up on Friday. That is one thing that I can't wait to see :D

82transam 10-31-07 09:27 AM

Sounds like your getting there. I fired up the T2 for the first time in about 5 months last night, still have some bugs to work out, but its getting there. Something tells me you'll be done before me though, I still have a few bigger ticket items that need to be bought, and I'm not sure when the money will be here....

dj55b 10-31-07 11:55 AM

Well besides it looking like a trio race now lol, I hope I''m not forgetting anything major to buy. Thats my major concern.

82transam 10-31-07 12:59 PM

Theres always something you'll forget or something you won't see coming, so expect that. This is my second total rebuild, and a much more ambitious one than the first, so its taking a while and getting costly fast.... That said the first time I hit boost It'll all be worth it :D

Here she is! I stopped on its way from the booth to the frame shop for some glamour shots outside.

Sam, the before pics of it entering the booth got deleted from the camera! My dad pulled some other photos off the camera to send to an insurance company and its setup to delete the pics after taking them off. I never told him I had important stuff on there though, so technically its my bad. :(

Anyways - here's the pics of it outside. Car turned out quite exceptional, I have to buff a few little things here and there since I'm picky, but all in all - very nice.

I'll post back either later on today or tomorrow with some pics of the associated parts in their new green suits :)

Enjoy!
