Not adding up
 

So I have question marks floating out of my head. If we are supposed to use 2 cycle in the gas tank at a rate of 16 oz per tank (or so), why doesn't the car use about a pint of oil per tank of gas when just running with the OMP alone? The most I have ever had to put in my 85 12a which I bought new is maybe a pint every 5,000 miles.

Sounds like your OMP isn't working right.

That's why we premix. Without a guilty conscience. Without misgivings. I left the OMP intact on all my rotarys and simply started adding about 6-8 oz to every fillup and my cars run smoother and smoother every year. Even the fuel system is better.

I use MMO primarily with a new car. Soon, my 'leaky injectors' on the SE ceased leaking and giving me flooding problems. I think the MMO detergents dissolved old fuel varnish that was hanging up the injectors.

I have started to pre-mix my worn out 12A, and noticed a performance improvement (slight).

Years ago I had a GSL-SE and was on a cross country road trip. There was a bad smell from under hood in Missouri so I pulled over, openeed the hood and saw that there were flames shooting up out of the area of the OMP. Turns out the oil metering lines had caught fire, don't know how or why. Miraculously, the fire eventually cauterized the lines closed and the fire went out, no damage to anything except the lines. There's a strong case to pre-mix and disconnect the OMP.

What about adding conventional or synthetic to tank, not 2-stroke?
 

I've read every post on this thread and have not seen where anyone is adding non-2-stroke oil to their tank. With an '84 GSL SE w/ an omp, can I add 10/40 or similar to my tank and expect added lubricating or just problems? I have had outboards b4 and not minded adding 2-stroke as a habit. I don't really like the idea of an omp going out on me without warning and losing my whole engine. What should I do? Do these omp's last forever or do they go and take the engine with them?

Ok so I saw two options at the store, either 16:1 or 32:1. I just started premixing with my '85 FB and have been using an 8 oz, 16:1 bottle per tank, should I use more? Less? the 32:1?

i understand that people usually do this when they remove the oil pump from the carb correct?

i have noticed that latly my car hasn't been using any oil "thinking it hasnt been injecting through the carb"...should i try and use some premix at my next fill up? will i harm the motor by adding the oil to my fuel tank even though the motor MAY still be injecting it into the motor?

i am trying to get this car running at its top shape i really dont want to damage the motor...so any help on this would be great. i usually drive this car pretty hard so i want to keep it well lubricated

You should be fine to premix. It won't hurt anything. So your OMP is still working. a little more oil won't hurt any. Check the linkage on the OMP. The OMP is a almost bullit proof device. they don't really brake down. theres really not alot too them. the only thing I could see happening is if the small opening gets clogged up. the lines fail from time to time. There only 40 bucks or so to replace. I broke my brittle old ones. they had a hard life. new ones look nice also. But putting a little bit of premix in the tank along with the OMP is just added protection. Maybe not a whole bottle but 4 oz or so. Also use quality oil. cheap stuff isn't good for anything.

i used to get Yamaha 2 stroke synthedic outboard engine oil in a one gallon jug that comes with a pour spout and a window on the side of the bottle for how much you and adding to the fuel. worked sweet in the pick up, plus it was smokeless just cost a little more than most. the standard mix ratio was 100 to 1, and worked good at 125 to 1, just a thought

i'll have to give this a try. im running a tank of seafoam right now. once the cars on E im going to go through and do a full tune "car hasn't had one in amlost 2 years" and i'll try adding some premix oil to the next tank and see how i like it

Some tuners claim that you guays are way overdoing it and that 4oz of a quality premix is more than enough--8oz for heavy track use.

I currently have a dwindling supply of Amsoil. I would not recommend anyone use MMO as it is not specificly intended to be a premix oil. Any one know the part numbers or where I can get Lucas premix oil in a gallon or any other high-quality/synthetic oil?

Me too. If you think about it, it IS more logical to put the 2 cycle oil in first. One time I over filled my tank and I didn't have room for the oil, so I had to drive around for a while and burn off some of the gas.

I have started saving the Amsoil for race days.

For regular street driving, I am using Lucas semi-syntetic smoke-free Premix. It comes in nice little 6.4 oz bottles that you can fit about 6 in your glove compartment. One time use, and you throw the bottle away. No leaking or dripping.

I do carry a yellow colloring pencil for pushing down the flapper door as the neck is not long enough to reach it. Why yellow, because it was the first one I grabbed (and easier to find ;) ).

I religiously run 1/2oz per gallon with the Amsoil Pre-mix. Virtually no smoke, and dead reliable.
If im going to run a track day or auto-x ill run a MAX of 1oz per gallon. After nearly 100k on 3 high mileage motors, ill never go back.....

Didn't trust my OMP after rebuild so went straight to premix.....haven't looked back.

Your crankcase oil is still pumped through the eccentric shaft and bearings, so yes, you should still do your regular oil/filter changes.

So is it a negatory on using MMO for premix purposes? Granted I'm an FC and as far as I know the OMP works fine...but I don't wanna take chances. I have a few quarts of MMO sittin in my garage. Use those then switch to Lucas (1/2oz : 1gal) after?

Isn't the stock OMP around a 350:1 ratio?

I removed it, and run about 341:1 without a cat and the smell isn't too bad, btw that's 8 gallons to 3 ounces of weed whacker special from the gas station. When I was running 1/2oz to 1 gal it was pretty awful smelling with the 256:1 and seemed to be a bit bogged down around town.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the 256:1 or more saturation be better for racing purposes?

Jet - my understanding is that MMO is essentially a CLEANER, not a lubricant. I think this is indicated right on their Site. Great for cleaning fuel system, etc; but, no, using it to sub for 2-cycle oil would be ill advised.
