Power Problem
Power Problem
Ok, so my engine runs nice and smooth (especially for 151,000 miles), starts just fine, but has no top end power. (I would tell you when on the rpm's but my tachometer doesn't work... some of you have read my posts.) Anybody have any suggestions? It is a completely stock 12a in an 83 GS. If this is normal (which I don't recall it being like this in my last 7, but that was @ 102,000 and 6 years ago), is there any way to get a little bit more power in my 7 without going buck wild with $$$? I have been sinking a lot into interior repairs. I am getting much more familiar with the engine and inner workings thanks to all of you who put useful knowledge up on these posts.
Is it misfiring, or just not pulling as hard in the top end?
Check in this order:
1) Fouled Plugs
2) Fuel Filter clogged / clogged secondaries.
3) Clogged Catalytics/exhaust
4) Screwed old ignitor/coil
If none of the above, I reccomend some ATF/MMO

It does not seem to be misfiring, just not pulling as hard. If the trailing igniter was bad, would that account for my tach not functioning as well? If it was bad, wouldn't the car be idling rough, or be hard to start?
[Secondaries stuck closed maybe? Check the arm / vacuum pot on the front passenger side of the carb]
Which vacuum port would that be? And the arm? You lost me....

look on the passenger side of the carb. there id a square metal piece w/ 4 screws in it sticking off at the top right hand corner. it will have a bracket with one of the black vacuum switch box thingies on it. now look down at the bottom of this thing and there will be a rod connected to it. make sure the rod can move and is sticking. if you want to get crazy and do a 5min mod, unscrew the cap on it. there is a spring inside that is used for resistance on opening your secondaries. some people cut it down. i bread tied it to make sure i could reverse it if needed. while open check that the rod is operating the diaphram correctly and there aren't any visible leaks in the black plastic. i would tell you if that fixed my high rpm problem (though i believe it was probably rust in the filters from my **** tank) but my new tank hasn't come in.
