points to electronic distributor
I know there has to be a thread on this, but I cant find one that answer the question so I understand.
I have a points distributor with one 3 pin harness, the new electronic has two 3 pin plugs. what in simple terms is the wiring for the second harness. Is there a real clear schematic somewhere? Thanks |
I cant beleive someone hasn't done this upgrade. Anyone. I may just drop a BBC in there and put a unilite in it :D
|
Makovai,
Love both your cars, man...really nice. What are you talking about? Color me stupid, but why would an electronic distributer have points ? What is a BBC ? What is a unilite ? Please define / expand on the "upgrade" you can't believe nobody has done. |
He wants to upgrade his point ignition to electronic ignition. I am not sure if there is a write up on this or not, but the easiest way to go about it, you will need:
- electronic dizzy - wiring harness - coils for electronic ignition Just get all of these from a wrecking yard and you will be set. Another option is to just buy new coils if you want a bit of an extra upgrade in the process. You can't use your old coils, though. I have a couple spare diamond coils for electronic ignition if you want them. David: BBC= Big Block Chevy Unilite=Mallory ignition module He is saying that if he doesn't get help on this, he will put a Chevy in it. Kent |

I hope so. I had to look up the unilite thing myself. I am still not sure what he means about having two three prong connectors, as the only connectors for the electronic ignition are the 2 two prong connectors for the igniters and then the individual connectors for the coils.

There are several write-ups on this...I did it. But I can't find the write-ups right now...I'll keep looking.

Here's one, but I know I used one that had a diagram...still looking.

Found it! Here's the one I used:

Thanks guys looks like I have some reading to do.
Thats exactly what I meant. Getting rid of the points and going to electronic distributor. BTW - I was wrong. they are 2 prong and they have a 3rd prong that holds the plug together. BBC = Big Block Chevy Unilite is a optic type mallory distributor BF = Blinker fluid :rlaugh: BTW = By the way Anyway ...I really appriciate the help. I'll leave my BBC in the vette, and continue to be a Rotard. Thanks again. |
Speaking of some reading to do, check this out. http://www.geocities.com/cd23c/dlidfis.html

Ok. now how can I replace the dizzy on a 73 rx12a engine with the dizzy from an 85 AFB ? Or did we just do that? Thanks.

install the 81+ dizzy as usual. Easier to just run new wires from the ignitors to the coils. |
81 dizzy
Darn you are quick!!!!!!! Thanks
|
'73 RX-2 engines have dual dizzies. It requires a front cover swap to '74 and later.
|
Im surprised that there are still old RX out there with orig dual dizzy engines.
|
I've got one that has a '74 front cover and an FB dizzy. :) Well, just the engine.
|
A Dual Dizzy 12A went across Ebay about a week ago. All ready and setup for a VW dune bugy.

Maybe I should keep the points as a conversation piece :) |
I was going to put my '73 12A into a bug at one point. That would have been fun.
