The Pettit 12A meets my RX7! *even DSL might have trouble*

After months of procrastinating, painting, and other non-engine-installing foolishness (about 7 months of bullshit courtesy of 81WideMariah and his thievery) My new Pettit racing 12A is finally installed and running perfectly, it's so much faster than my old 12A. Anyways, here are some pics showing garage carnage. But first, a recap of the engine as I got it from Pettit.

Home brew OMP blockoff plate.

Getting ready, painting and cleaning things.

Painted water pump, dual belt pulley and alternator off of my friends FC.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress014.jpg

My $50 header coated with that 1500 degree ceramic paint, which has actually been holding up quite well, it just got kind of ashy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress017.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress024.jpg

I broke the oil level sensor when I was installing it, so after seeing how much a new one was, ($160) I said fuck it and made another aluminum blockoff plate.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress024.jpg

Almost in, oh snap!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress035.jpg

W00T it's in!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress037.jpg

"Hurr... Is dis a beer keg?"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress041.jpg

"What are these oil coolers you speak of?"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress040.jpg

CARBUETOR!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress043.jpg

AIRRRRRRRRR conditioning.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress044.jpg

It runs like a dream, so much more powerful, even though I'm still breaking it in, keeping it off the secondaries and under 4k rpm, it's almost as fast as my old engine was at WOT.

Now for some nice pictures.

Very nice, congrats! Well done on the clean and tidy engine comparment too. I wish mine could be half as nice.

John64 08-24-07 03:36 PM

Great job!

Street port, with a locked dizzy for now. Eventually I'll try my stock dizzy and see how that compares to a locked one.

82transam 08-24-07 06:12 PM

Nice looking car, very clean, I like it! Any idea what kind of hp that has?

2wankel 08-24-07 08:27 PM

Props to an 18 year old who can do most of the work himself. Very nice looking ride! :icon_tup:

dj55b 08-24-07 10:04 PM

Nice and clean installl ... ya'll just wait till I start picture post whoring of my car when its done ..

Box_Man 08-25-07 12:50 AM

Thanks for the replies guys. I screwed up some of the pictures and can't go back to edit them, so I'll just post them here.

Closeup of the alternator pulley, sadly this alternator had a regulator failure, so I had to go back to a stock 50 amp temporarily.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress029.jpg

Here's that stupid blockoff plate I made for the oil level sensor that broke, and my shiny new oil pan bolts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...rogress026.jpg

And I did do most of the work all by my self in my garage, and at Pettit's shop. They let me hang around at the shop to help build the engine and learn, it was really cool. A few days ago I brought the car back to Pettit racing to pick up some more Protek R oil*, Cam was really impressed at how good a job I did by myself, and how clean I got the engine bay. (The engine bay was so dirty, the white paint that was visible had turned yellow)

*Which is not MMO, contrary to popular belief. It smells like Vitamin C pills and is more thick and dark than MMO, and smokeless too. :D

openshot 08-25-07 01:03 AM

vary nice. you should get a video of her running.

mar3 08-25-07 01:15 AM

Very nice...now we need some finished underhood shots...and the AT&T DSL connection didn't have a problem loading this thread up in quick fashion...:D

Box_Man 08-25-07 01:29 AM

I'll take some finished underhood shots tomorrow. I'll see about a video too, I don't have a camera that will do video, just a digital SLR that takes really nice still pictures. :)

dbragg 08-25-07 07:44 AM

whats with the block off plate on the oil pan?

jay85gs 08-25-07 10:29 AM

Great Job, and beautiful 7, very clean!

Jeff20B 08-25-07 11:57 AM

Ah, so that's why the side plates are flat black. Nice work.

That's for the oil level sensor, that I broke. All it does is control an idiot light that tells you that you need to check your oil. Since I'm no longer burning oil on purpose, and already check my oil every time I fill the gas tank, I didn't see it necessary to buy another sensor for $160.

The irons are actually kind of a slate gray, and all of the aluminum parts are powdercoated metallic silver.

BTW: I got the FMOC, UPS banged it up a little bit, so I spent a few days straightening fins. It looks really nice now, next step is getting it cleaned, then finding out what I should do for oil cooler lines... AN fittings are awesome, but modded FC lines are so easy for me to do. Decisions, decisions. :)

glewsRx 08-25-07 12:39 PM

that is very nice and very clean. congrats on one of the nicest looking fb's I've seen in a while.

Frogblender 08-25-07 01:23 PM

I'm the same age as you but I have to say kudos to this. You've got quite the know-how, in the future I'd like to do my own engine swaps but at the moment I'm content with someone else doing them for me :lol2:

That's my friend's 92 Cabrio which has a ton of work done to it. We swapped the engine for another counterflow 8 valve engine, with a dual outlet manifold, side exit exhaust, and a custom intake that made us relocate the battery to the trunk. He also removed the back seats and put in carpet where they used to be, which looks really good.

I couldn't take those pics today because of the rain, I might be able to do them tomorrow.

and I'll see what I can do about some high res pics. I may be able to host them on Red Pepper Racing's image gallery.

vipernicus42 08-25-07 11:37 PM

Looks beautiful.

But after putting such a phenomenal-looking engine in... the stock Nikki really doesn't fit. Get a Sterling on there for goodness' sake!!

But yes, I'm very jealous

What's the "DANE" stamp on the rotor housings?

kgray 08-26-07 09:47 AM

It's a petit only port. The dane port!

I think that's his name actually and just did it because he could.

4WDrift 08-26-07 10:08 AM

that is a nasty car, i wish i had an FB so bad sometimes just the sake of being OG. very very nice car keep it clean and get a video up

TiViD 08-26-07 10:45 AM

very nice car, and what kind of D-SLR are you using cause im in the market for one. Thanks.

Yeah, that's my name, Just as we were leaving Pettit, we started joking around about monogramming the Rotor housings, and that ended up happening, somewhat like a tattoo? :rlaugh:

The camera I'm using is a Cannon Rebel XTi EOS 400D digital SLR. It was really expensive, but this has to be the nicest camera I've ever used. In a few of the shots I used a Cannon Wide angle lens, which puts my 30 year old, super expensive Minolta SRT 101 lenses to shame.

I tried to use Red Pepper Racing's Gallery to upload some high res pics, but it refuses to work for me right now.

zephyr07 08-26-07 02:25 PM

Hey very nice, very clean FB. So jealous of how good the engine looks. I was actually thinking of getting a similar VW to keep the 7 out of the snow and the miles down. How does your friend like his? Kind of a random question but are those Pumas you were wearing good for driving? I need something good for heel-toe shifting. Sorry to run off topic but very nice FB!

Nice! :)

glewsRx 08-26-07 05:49 PM

Now that it's all high res, that shit is bunk! Nah man I'm joking. Made me finally decide on white and keeping the trim instead of shaved and silver. Way to be.

**UPDATE TIME!**

I have almost 800 miles on it so far, and it's running excellent with kickass gas mileage too. I'm getting around 24 MPG, which is awesome compared to my old engine that got 16. I also cracked open the secondaries yesterday passing someone for almost a second before I backed off, reminding myself of the new engine. Holy crap those secondaries are serious. It pulled REALLY hard when they opened up. :shocking:

BTW, Did I mention that Magnaflows suck? After the car is broken in I'll see if I can get a video up with some exhaust noise. Keep in mind that none of the exhaust noise is coming from the tips, all of the exhaust noise on the car comes from the oval-shaped magnaflow in the middle of the system, with it's resonating sides. It's so loud that I can imagine looking under the car and seeing the sides of the can vibrating, at speed it sounds like someone rubbing a wet finger on a wine glass, into a megaphone. :wallbash:

On that note, I wonder if a Pettit resonated midpipe could be worked into a custom exhaust system...they really do sound nice and do not rattle the cabin at all.

Jeff20B 08-31-07 05:44 PM

Did you use thinwall pipe too?

Box_Man 09-01-07 12:35 AM

The whole exhaust system needs to be redone, The pipes are leftover thick stainless pipes from my friend's Jetta TDi, they're not ringing at all. The ringing is definitely coming from the magnaflow that doesn't need to be there. When I redo it I'd like to go either true dual with Borla XR-1's or long primaries into a RacingBeat muffler designed for the long primaries. My current RacingBeat muffler has the single 2" pipe, and I think it's quieter than stock, even without presilencers. :shocking:

On a side note: I hate ricers. Some kid in a second gen Integra kept trying to race me in traffic. He would wind his ear shatteringly loud LS up to redline, with a HUGE cloud of smoke for some reason (like it was running really rich), which also took way too long to reach redline, in neutral. So after a few miles of badgering, he took off in typical ricer flyby fashion, which really wasn't that spectacular. Honestly, I think my friend's MK1 VW was faster even when it was stock.

Box_Man 09-13-07 12:03 PM

Woo, Videos!

Sitting in my driveway, blipping the throttle...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7Vc-ZRrJ6M

Going for a drive, notice the resonating exhaust, and my horrible rear end noise...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGuw56wCcrw

MODS: if a mod is reading this, can you please edit my first post to take out the bit about 81WideMariah, the engine belonged to his friend, not him, so he didn't rip me off.

FirebirdSlayer666 09-13-07 12:27 PM

Wow that magnaflow is seriously shitty. A Borla would comliment that motor nicely. Looks great and at least it sounded like it pulled hard, video quality wasn't the best LOL

jshiz 09-13-07 12:34 PM

that has to be the most distink noise i've ever heard. but your fb makes me want to do an engine swap to my fb. maybe a 20b....

Jeezus 09-13-07 12:36 PM

2FPS FTW!

Lol. Yeah, that magnaflow needs to go... I didnt believe you when you said it but wow, it really does ring! Congrats on the car!

Jeff20B 09-13-07 12:38 PM

Good luck with the exhaust and rear end. I still say you should get thickwall pipe.

Box_Man 09-13-07 02:54 PM

I'd like to find a GSL rear end to rebuild and put Kia gears in, but I'd have to find one first, all the 1st gens that show up in junkyards around here have drums.

For exhaust, I was thinking of doing long primaries collected just before the axle into 2.5" SS piping, and either into this magaflow... (You guys are probably going to beat me with a stick for even suggesting it.) :bottom:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Or this Borla... (yay)
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

The only thing I'm worried about with the Borla is the oval shape, I don't want another resonating can under my car. That's why I was thinking about that Magnaflow, because it's round, and baffled, not packed full of flamable fuzz like my current Magnaflow.

85 FB 09-13-07 03:10 PM

Wow. So, that's what an original white Rex should look like. Mine's too faded. And, outstanding pics of the engine and car. Two thumbs up for the fact that YOU YOURSELF did all the work, and such attention to detail and hard workmanship.

And, as far as exhaust, from what I read, you want Borla because their material inside their mufflers don't melt like Magnaflow's does.
