is it okay for my car to be on jack stands for a long period of time.
I need to raise my car so that I can remover the exhaust and my tranny mounts.
should I just put them on the frame rails that run along the side of the car. |
You're on the right track, Buckaroo....
Where the sub-frame meets the firewall is a strong area to place your front jack-stands. In the back you can use either the rear axle, or the triangular section that holds the suspension link bar that goes to the axle. I prefer the suspension mount area. Do not use the rails under the car. They are thin, and crushable... Denny, From the 'ol corncrib...;) |
Its also a good idea if you store the car over the winter, or for an extended period of time. It keeps the tires from going flat. Its near impossible to push a car out of a garage with 2 flat tires. Ask me how I know;)

the tire thing is the other reasone I want to get it on jack stands.
So I want the back stand where the axle links hook up to the frame and on the front I want them on the frame at the firewall. |
hope so because my car has been up in the air since july:eek:

My MG Midget was on jackstands during the early '01 quake near Seattle. It didn't fall off! However, a Fiat X1/9 engine block sitting on a skateboard slid off onto a piece of cardboard and dinged my garage floor. The engine block was ok too (so is my garage floor; it has many dings hehe!).

MIne was up in the air for almost a year :)

for extra precaution you could even set a 2X4 to spread out the weight...
|
I have my front tires on Ramps, and the rears is on Jackstands, with an extra "safe" set under the axle.
|
make sure you rotate those tires a few times, so they dont get out of shape:)

im swapping in a turbo, i doute my these first set of tires will last long.
