oil pressure
Can someone please help me out on this one. Mainly, I have a 1st gen with a 13b streetport and just switched to a 79 oil pressure regulator shimmed for higher pressure with the front cover’s oil by-pass shimmed as well. While warming up or with the engine cold, I can get over 80 psi. I know that the oil thins out by appx 10psi but how come the most I get is about 50-60psi once the oil temp increases to 160*F. do I need to change the oil pump or is this normal.
Thanks. |
i have an 85 GSL-SE and the oil pressure generally stays between 55-60 psi at an rpm range of 2500-3000. this is using 10W-30. It does increase to over 60 when rpms climb over 3500. I have driven it like this for a year without any problems. Using 20W-50 might increase the oil pressure a bit. I did see pressure drop to 50 psi at higher rpms when i had a leaky oil cooler. So you don't need to worry too much about it.

i just became very concern as the racing beat articles about the oil pressure exceeding 71psi above 3000 rpm. thanks for that info. |
Mine will go up around 70 psi when cold but definately wants to settle around 60psi when hot. the haynes manual says 62-84 psi at 3000 rpm. I am not sure if that applies to only 12A motors or not. I read some info on atkinsrotary.com which said the bare minimum pressure reqd was 15 psi. What weight oil are you using anyway?

im using castrol 20/50 with autometer mechanical oil pressure/oil temp/water temp gauges. the stock pressure gauge have same reading as the autometer.

Any chance of a pressure loss accross the oil cooler? what is the oil pressure at idle when warmed up?
|
no leak on the oil cooler nor the lines at all. oil pressure at idle when cold is 50 and at 2500 rpm - over 100ps. idle when warm 20psi @ 950 rpm.
