Is this normal??

Is it normal, when you are done driving, you step back a few feet, get that right perspective, and just grin and yell "I LOVE MY CAR!!!" ?

I don't know what it is...

Maybe it's when I drive down the road with a grin on my face, because everyone else's car has 60 more moving parts under the hood...
or maybe it's because my 1.2 liter 100HP Mazda can keep up with (and beat in some cases) the 99-2002 civics, integras, and eclipses at my school, and my car is 18 years old...

Or perhaps it's because my back window is really big, so people behind me can see into my sporty 2 seater car, with a bitchin' stereo.

Whatever it may be, I have a true infatuation with my car

How about you?

riffraff 04-10-02 08:09 PM

hell yah it is.
even with the big ass fucking dent in the back of my car, i still do it..

REVHED 04-10-02 08:09 PM

Does this answer your question? :mspank: :D

brownmound 04-10-02 08:20 PM

Sometimes I think I'm losing the faith. Ya know - fuck this damn backfiring, damn smelly exhaust, damn windows getting stuck, damn clunks from all over the suspension, damn oil leaks, damn add coolant light coming on for no reason, damn weak electrics, damn no A/C in the hell of Texas heat, damn needs new paint, new grill, new valence, new rear bumper piece of shit. Then I wash it, and as the sun is setting over the gorgeous hills of Austin, the light hits it just right, and it kinda looks like it must have 18 years ago in the first owner's garage, when he probably was doing what I'm doing right now, just sitting here drinking my Lone Star and saying, "Damn, what a beautiful car." That's what keeps me going.

Right on.

peejay 04-10-02 08:46 PM

One time it was closing time and i was leaving last w/my boss, and i walked out and I started giggling, and my boss asked me what was so funny. I just pointed at my car (this was a month or two after I got WT) and I said "I get to drive THAT home tonight".

He told me I wasn't right in the head, and then he got into his (snicker) '89 Tercel and drove off. Oh no sir, I beg to differ!

85RX7GS 04-10-02 08:53 PM

I know what you mean. I love driving my car, and it definitely dominates over those stupid Integras. :)

coldy13 04-10-02 09:04 PM

yea, my car still doesnt run, so i just sit in it, turn on the music, and act like i'm driving :)

1Bad85Rex 04-10-02 09:48 PM

I'll admit it, theres' no engine in the Rex right now, but I still find myself sitting behind the wheel going "VROOM VROOM VROOM... SCREEEEEECH...... VROOOOOM.... (shift) VROOOOOOOM (shift) VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM" while watching the imaginary Civic fall further and further behind. I can't help it, is this a sickness?

coldy13 04-10-02 09:50 PM

i dont think its a sickness, more of a sanity issue, yesterday i beat an integra in the 1/4 mile, all while sitting in my garage.....

brake 04-10-02 10:24 PM

reinforced all the much more when i have to drive my S10 with a dying 2.8, slipping auto, and ramdomly stalls all winter. 0-60 in about 20 secs, top speed about 90 downhill and about .6g's in the bends to boot. all the while my poor 7 sits at my parents 2.5 hours away with no one to give her the love she needs.

jeremy 04-10-02 10:32 PM

i try to find the love even though its never started under its own integrity. i just keep thinking, one day...........

NanaimoRx-7 04-11-02 02:22 AM

Allllll the time. I walk away looking at her like it's the first time. I know all the good angles to look from to...admit it there ARE some bad ones. Others just don't get it...it's my car, my passion, it's me.

HELL YEAH I HAVE 86 I BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HONDA'S
AND MY 7 IS STOCK

BLAZE IT !

inittab 04-11-02 07:47 AM

I Absolutely love my 7! It's old, it's rough and it's got issues but that's what I love about it. It's a car that's actually fun to work on and besides whenever I show the engine to boinger-head the slack-jaw dumb look on their face is priceless.

repuguru 04-11-02 08:17 AM

Yup, I know what you mean. Even after 14 years of owning some form of a 1st gen RX7 I still sometimes walk around the car to get just the "right"perspective before I walk in my house. The design is classic.

I even do this with my REPU sometimes. But I also realize that some people think REPU's are ugly as hell. I don't mind. I like driving a truck that no one at the stop light beside me has.

iyaseven 04-11-02 09:48 AM

the neighbors don't speak anymore, sent parking control, now i have to pull them around the block every 72 hours with my ford ranger, a delivery truck totaled my havana brown gs, just like brownmounds' the sheriff won't let drive until i re-title, but i ease her crumpled light-cover and fender into traffic anyway. hear that k&n pulling air, see the look of fear on those pretenders faces as i shift away at the stop light.

hanman 04-11-02 10:04 AM

Hey kids, it last forever! I look at my black 1980 that I have owned since it was on the showroom floor, yep that's right, 22 years, and I still think.......what a beautiful car! Obviously I am an old shit. But I love my RX's.......
80 GS since new
85 GSL-SE
86 Base model
90 Vert black and beautiful
and they all run, some just a little better than others.

Nothing in my life gives me more pleasure than working on these cars. In fact my 80 has outlasted two wives, and given me a lot less grief.
So enjoy the RX, it last forever.

speckamp 04-11-02 10:31 AM

It's wierd... I've got a car that needs paint, needs body work on both front and rear, needs tires like hell, and needs a few more odds and ends done to make her "right" again, but every time I open the garage with the key in my hand I smile. Flick the key to start and listen to her catch, and I smile. Hear the exhaust popping when I shift until she warms up and I smile. Toss her gently into a curve and I smile. Open up the 3 little throttle plates wide, watch the "boost" gauge hit 0 and hear the resounding roar of the twin tail pipes trying to throw all the exhaust and fuel behind me and I just can't help but feeling like she's brand new, with no problems, no worries, nothing but pure joy.

and I smile.

Normal? I guess that depends on what kind of car you're talking about... So I can't beat much on the road, so freaking what? This is an RX-7, the reason to love these cars is because they love you back. They give you pure joy while driving. They're well balanced, flingable, and they stop like a F-14 that just caught the tailhook on the deck of a carrier. People that never owned one, or never spent much time behind the wheel of one can't understand, because not much else can give you the same feeling as one of these cars.

So if you own an RX-7, then yes, that behavior is perfectly normal. I quite often find myself humming engine noises to myself, immitating a blow off valve (even tho the car won't have one of those for a very long time at this rate), and grinning.

:D
I love how people come up to me and ask me qustions like.... IS THAT A PORSCHE?? WHERE DID YOU BUY THAT RACECAR??? Ahh the bliss of ignorance... OH and lets not forget the Ricer Hon-Duhs at every other street light in Brooklyn NY!!! They start lookin and revving until all the see is the flash of backfire and tailights!

79rex 04-11-02 10:46 AM

My 7 tries to kill me every day and I love more and more everytime I drive it.

Let me expand. I drive to work. Sit in the parking lot for and extra 20 minutes just listening to her idle. Then I get out and walk backwards into the building just so I can watch it for a few more minutes.

Almost been hit a dozen times.

Four thirty rolls around and I get antsy. I know I get to go home in a car almost as old as I am, and it still makes the most wonderful sounds.

Vroom, screeeeech, (shift) screeech, shift screech, and then were off.

I live 1.5 miles from work, and my wife questions why it takes me 45 minutes to get home.

"Youve been driving again havent you."

hanman 04-11-02 10:52 AM

YellowJacket 04-11-02 11:05 AM

Hey at least U cant ever be accused of cheating on your wives/girlfriends!! You can always say..... Nah babby I was with my 7 and we took the scenic route!

geikiganger 04-11-02 12:04 PM

Something about the 7 just hits all the right buttons. Even though I've basically been doing 'test' drives in 20 minute shots to diagnose something, I love it all the same. Soon it will be legal....soon....

Oh, and Yay for living in a state that doesn't have emmission laws (or at least doesn't care to enforce them!)

Is "havana brown" the official name for the color of that brown? If so that's pretty dang cool.

Right on.

brownmound 04-11-02 12:23 PM

on the same note

Are any of ya'll semi-neurotic like me and not let ANYONE drive your FB? I count on maybe one hand the number people that have driven my car (aside from mechanics/inspection people). I won't let anyone drive it. Not even to move it out of the driveway if I am blocking someone. It's kinda like the love a mother has for a newborn baby. Partyly I don't trust other people to drive it, partly it has too many "quirks" to explain, and partly I don't really think they would appreciate it.

Right on.

sunshine 04-11-02 12:28 PM

You guys crack me up...but I'm right there with ya!

Whenever I'm out with my g/f and we just get home from somewhere...she gets out of the car and goes inside...I'm allways a minute behind her. She always asks what I was doing and I just tell her that I was staring at my 7.

iyaseven 04-11-02 01:28 PM

yeah brownmound, i looked it up on one of those sites like felix miata's had whole bunch of color codes for first and second g's
have you ever fought rush hour madness and once at home felt really bad about turning the key off. seems like it gives a little extra purr like a cat thats still hungry.

damon 04-11-02 01:33 PM

Hey at least most of you can or have driven your 7 in the past 2 years

I was young and stupid and let a friend borrow my 7 and it was broken into stolen...
Clarion cd deck w/ changer
4 JL w6 12" subs
rf 800 (old school) 4 channel
mtx crossover
and not to mention broken windows , dash , and torn leather seats

I didn't find out about this until she stripped the tranny one week after I lent it to her

unapprecieative beiotch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But of cource I have finally found a parts car and low and behold it was a package deal (2 7s for the price of 500 dollars 1 runs 1 just parts)

I still find myself climbing into my first seven and racing everything I can imagine in my backyard

preach on my brothers and sisters

long live the 7

reddy4fun

YellowJacket 04-11-02 02:35 PM

I would NEVERRRRR lend ANYONE my 7!!! Not even with me in the passenger seat, shifting the gears myself, and with a remote rev limiter set to 4k rpm!!! Thats MY CAR dammit MINE alone!!! You wanna burrow something of mine.... here take my girlfrined!!

79rex 04-11-02 04:21 PM

And my wife.

RotoHead 04-11-02 06:29 PM

ROFL! :D I am not that Extreme like YellowJacket, but yeah. I stare at my car every time I go to my MILs. Of course, I actually hope to have it smogged sometime this century and be actually driving it again! :) But until then, I can always stare and sit in it!

Chris

82transam 04-11-02 08:56 PM

I love the way FB's look. Whenever I have to go to my part time gas station job I always part my rex where I can stare at it when no customers are there. I stare at it even when they are anyway! :D I don't let anyone drive it either, for all the reasons previously mentioned. Peace everyone, rx7's 4ever :D :D

4ohfour 04-11-02 09:57 PM

My rex is the second car I have ever owned, and my first manual transmission, shes in the garage right now, her engine on the stand in half a million pieces, waiting to purr once more, when she ran (for the week) it was a joy, I'd get off work at midnight, and walk into my house at 2:00, i can walk to my work in less than 15 mins...

Sometimes, I go into the garage and sit on the stairs, just looking at the front, on jackstands, no engine, just the gaping maw of an IMSA air dam staring back at me... and I smile.

before I leave to go anywhere i stick my head in the garage and look one last time, i get into my friends car and we go off to the bar, i say nothing, but the tune in my head repeats itself over and over again...

zoom zoom zoom

the rx-7 isn't just a car, its a style, in a class by itself.

and this is why i love it.

cheers'

Mags 04-12-02 06:42 PM

I've owned two before my 85 GSLSE.

1. 81 GSL
2. 85 S

Through my entire life I have never been more satisified with any other car I've ever owned. I have always considered all other cars "placeholders" until I found another 7. As far as I'm concerned the first gen rx-7 will be my only car.

As it is true with anything else, if you take care of it properly it will last forever.

Once I get some pics of my ride I'll post.

Peace.

M.

pissonpistons 04-16-02 01:54 AM

You think you got it made, i have to push start my car everytime i start is except the very first tie in the morning. I have to add coolant about three times a day, fill three out of four tires once a day, jack on the control arm because the jack punches through 298000 miles of rust on the frame, and wait for my new j-spec. This ofcourse is all after a 9 month wait when i decided to cange my manifld turbo gasket and put it together and no fuel no spark. 3 dealeships later and 9 months and i have a fucked air fow meter. then when it got fixed i was in arizona gong to school so i couln't even drive it i could only hear my friend tell me over the phone how the 3" straight back off the turbo sounds as he hit second adde a180 like nothing in our high school parking lot. yeah i would say only a 7-head would still be driving this thing as an everyday driver. When ibought the thing i had no idea what a rotary was i just knew the 87 t 2 was fast i learned and could do nothing but fall in love. Nothing on my car is ingod condition except the exaust and the huge blue flames it throws as i hit gears. I tell you one thing when i am done with this thing it will be spotless and unbeatable and nothing less, that is all i can settle for, the 7deservs it. Never been in a situation like this one and wont love another one bettter. Ryan

So True..Everybody still thinks I am crazy for getting another RX-7 after all these years, with two brand new cars in the garage already.

Good! It's not Just me!! I've been doing that since my first Seven over 12 years ago!

That's why I got one now, I never realized my dream of a Turbo First Gen...

soon...

peejay 04-16-02 12:26 PM

If I were to get any other car, it would either be an older Subaru (long story but very nice cars) or a first-gen Miata.

Try this. Sit in an SA22C. Note the positioning of the pedals, the steering wheel, the dash vents, etc. Then sit in a 1st-gen Miata. It feels almost exactly the same. They drive pretty durn similarly, too, especially if you get an early 1.6l with manual steering.
