My custom built intake

What I did

I was on Rotary Performance's website and came across their $60 12A "Bonez Air Intake Kit". I looked at the pictures and after spending a mere $1.50, I had one that's identical. Mind you, my intake setup is only 50% complete. I plan to take this modification further to make a completely "open air canister" that still has all the provisions for the emissions equipment. Here's a picture off of Rotary Performance's website that basically shows what I did.

My question

Now a question for those who have this setup from RP or for those who have made their own: when I REALLY step on the gas, I can hear this roar from the carb that sounds really freakin' cool! :D However, is this due to all the air rushing in OR because of a bad solenoid valve? I just want to be certain that this is normal when installing this setup.

Performance

Holy monkey! The car accelerates like a bat out of hell! It's MUCH more quick on it's feet than it was before. I've also noticed that the prior "restriction" that I felt when "winding-out" the engine is gone. The power that I feel is now smooth and stronger. I have no clue as to how much horsepower this added, if any, but what matters is that the ReX seems happier now.

What are your other mods? And did you test it when your engine bay was hot?

85RX7GS 01-14-03 03:56 PM

The only other "mod" I have made to the engine is a K&N air filter. The rest is stock.

I drove 50 miles with that setup, so obviously, the engine got a chance to warm up with the mix of city and highway driving.

How did you put it together????

neoboi 01-14-03 05:27 PM

got any pics of your intake? $60 is a lot to me, can you make me one and buy it off you? heeheheheh REMEMBER PICS!!! hahaha

85RX7GS 01-14-03 06:33 PM

Yeah, I can make one for you. You can email me or PM me if you want one made.

My rex came with the RP setup and a K&N. Unforunately I don't have a before and after comparison for ya. But it's pretty zippy especially after the mechanical secondary mod. hey 85RX7GS! From what I remember after you rode in my rex you stepped out of it with a grin from ear to ear. :D Glad to hear your setup is work'n for ya!

the noise you hear now is normall muffled with the stock air cannister lid on. Air rushing in. Normal.

Go get a dellorto with RB road race exhaust & lightweight flywheel and then the real fun and grinning begins.

Can't do that in NJ, it probably wouldn't pass the smog test. :(

neoboi 01-14-03 09:26 PM

Won't pass smog here in CA either, but lots of people doing it. Just store all the stock smog equip in a cool dry place and wrap them in saran wrap to keep moisture, bugs, dirt out of there. Then bolt stock stuff on when smog time comes around.

Did that for years.

Anyone thought of making one out of plexy glass? You could see your carb all the time.. And still would be very cheap:) just an idea!

bcty 01-15-03 02:18 AM

not a bad idea..

That's exactly what I did. Rev it up and you can look down and see the gas squirting and the oil dripping down out of the injectors. It's really cool! Pics will be coming soon. :)

Very, Very nice, 85RX7GS. I'll be doing that this afternoon if my time isn't monopolized by putting on snow tires.

Yep, it was your idea to make leave the plastic clear.

357 01-15-03 03:08 PM

What thickness of plexiglass did you use. I just picked up a .093" 11x14 sheet at the store for $1.82. Its seems to me that it'll be stiff enough. Also, how long a threaded rod did you get to extend the stock one, and what thread is it?

85RX7GS 01-15-03 05:52 PM

I used a 3" long 8x1.25mm threaded rod.

cveklund 01-16-03 09:42 AM

Did you use a rubber seal for the top of the airfilter?

12aPwr 01-16-03 08:15 PM

that plexi glass idea sounds real good. the next wave of detailing your engine, much credit to those who thought about it

85RX7GS 01-16-03 08:22 PM

Yep, it was a good idea. I'll get pics as soon as I'm able (don't have a digital camera).

I used a rubber gasket that I got out of a spare air canister.

357 01-16-03 08:52 PM

Well, stupidly, I have to return the bolt that I bought to hold the thing on, cause I didn't look at how it was set up beforehand. How exactly did you set up the attachment system, 85rx7gs?

In terms of the seal, I don't think you'd actually need one with a K&N, on account of its squishy enough as is.
