most expensive single part
I was just wondering.. what's the most expensive single part to replace? I ask because I just got a quote from the Evansville Mazda dealer for a new gas tank... it was $1,056 just for the tank. I didn't realize they must be lined with gold! Can anyone beat that?

I got a quote of 950 dollars for a power steering pump for my 85.

Try and find a set of old rotor style tail lights for an rx-3. They only came out on teh GT moddel only in Jap. for 2 years on "selected" cars only. I talked with a guy in aus. who had a set new in boxes one set of about 4 or 5 in his whole country and i guess someone offered 7k for them but he dident take it. he said he sold a used pair for 3k. crazy stuff.

I called my Mazda dealer and got a 1400 dollar quote for a new Power steering pump a year or so ago.... OUch!

I think a factory cat is something like $2500.
Which is why it hurts me so much to see people just mindlessly gutting them... there are people who need to have functional factory cats in order to maintain race legality (autocross classes, Spec-7) and $2500 is usually more than double the car's value. |
yeah if your going to gut a cat get a $50 pep boyz one.
oh another expensive part: 84-85 gsl/ gsl-se red leather seat dealer cost was $1600 retail was over 2k just for one mike |
if we are going by money to size ratio, local dealer(theif) wants 425 for an ignightor.

i thank god everyday that I work at a mzda dealer and can get my parts cheap.

I just totaled my Porsche 944 Turbo. The front plastic nose piece (just the part) cost over $3k.
But I'd say the most expensive part to replace would be the driver. |
i agree.
asemaster- do a little research on gas tanks or contact me. i know a thing or two on this subject. |
The mazda dealer in Joplin, MO said it'd be $9,000 for a brand new transmission for my 85.
I was like "?!" |

When in doubt on prices use the Mazda Rip Off Rule Of Thumb
Take what you think it costs and multiply by ten, if you want more HP triple again! |
Yah the Mazda Parts prices are amazing. Yesterday I priced a Power Steering pump (as a few above have) for my 88 TurboII.
Mazda price $1034 (with my 15%discount). Autozone remanufactured unit price $139. I thought there would be a difference in what I was getting, like the remanufactured one would just be the pump without the electrical stuff and the resevoir, but its the exact same thing (just rebuilt rather than new of course). I even asked the Mazda parts dealer if they sell remanufactured ones, and he told me no. Kinda does look like that multiply by 10 rule here. :) Its a real shame that Mazda doesn't try to be more reasonable with their parts prices, but I guess they're really in the business to sell new cars, not keep our old ones going. Oh well. |
While I have not researched this info for Mazdas, I do know that for Nissan, the dealers are allowed to charge any price that they want. Basically, the dealers are the ones who decide on the going price. That is why different Nissan dealerships in a given area (like SoCal) can have totally different rates. So the blame may be on the dealerships, not necessarily Mazda corporate.
