"Mazda Screws Car Owners on Lugbolt Choice"

Went to an autoparts place looking for studs to replace my lugbolts with. I need long studs for the wheels I have. They did have metric (I congradulated them, and welcomed them to the twentieth cetury:) ), but they had nothing over ten mm. I need 12mm by 1.5 TPM. So it came as no suprise that they might have to be ordered. I figured even if they had some, they probably would'nt have enough. Their supplier does'nt have them!. Ok, so back to the shop I go. Anyone familiar with the company "MSC" (Machinest Supply Company)? Well their catalogue is about five-six inches thick! They have studs in all kinds of sizes. But the 12 mm ones go from 1.25 TPM straight to 1.75 TPM...NO 1.5!!! WTF?! Soooo, I need to know where y'all got yer studs. I want to use threaded studs as opposed to the splined "pull-tight" inserts. With them, you have to pull the axel, and then you forever ruin the threads on the axels. |
I got mine at the local Pep Boys. They were the only ones to have it. It was about 1/2" longer and was originally for a GM. It was also one of the hardened studs, not one of those cheap silver looking studs. I just had to go searching through their stud bins. I've had no problems with them and have had them on the car for about 2 years.

I found that ALL lug bolts have the correct 12x1.5 thread.
The ones for my SA's wheels were far too long to use with my steel race wheels. I didn't have any studs, and the Mazdacomp studs don't work with SA wheels anyway. So I went to the auto parts store and asked for 8 lug bolts with thread X long, and 8 more with thread Y long. (Fronts having to be shorter than rears since the fronts don't have to go through a drum) The guy brings out a whole collection and I choose which ones I need. I think it cost a total of $20 or $30. I think the fronts were originally for a Pontiac LeMans (the Daewoo wannabe), not sure about the rears - maybe some sort of Volvo?. They all are 19mm hex so they're definitely not from a VW (17mm hex). The MazdaComp studs will work with the '81-up cross wheels, it looks like. Definitely not the SA's waffle wheels. All that background info said.... go to a junkyard and hunt down an SA and steal its lug bolts. :) |
Don't remeber what car they were for - just make sure you get the same knurl on the stud.

shit when i got the studs put in on my 81 gsl they were 16$ including install and a locking nut with the key. just go to a large wheel shop they have all kinda studs

I paid $40 for mine... a racer got them for me at Mazda Comp prices :) I never used 'em though, since they're not long enough for SA wheels, and now that I have the FB, I discovered that one can use steel wheels with the factory FB lug bolts no problem.

Make friends with your local Mazda dealer's parts guys. I got as many used ones as my pockets could carry for FREE. They had a whole bucket full of them to look through for condition too... ;)
