MI Mariah prepped????

Hello guys and gals,

Recently acquired a 1983 Mazda rx-7 gsl-se

The owner I purchased it from said it was a Mariah edition.

I know this may sound completely stupid but I tried doing research in here and across the web. What does Mariah mean????? Thanks

Sean

Mariah generally refers to Mariah Motorsports and in particular their bodypieces either the Mode 4 or the Widebody.

Pics of your car might help identify it further. Also the GSL-SE was only made in 1984-1985 so either you might be a year off or you have a car with GSL-SE running gear [rear axle, suspension, brakes etc.]

Mode 4

Widebody (well one of them atleast, there are a few variations)

You're in Brighton? I'm in Dexter. We should meet up. I'd like to see your new FB.

Also are you planning on going to DGRR?

i see no mariah parts on that, but that's actually good, cause they are all horribly ugly.

that looks like the factory front IMSA spoiler thing, and targa band, on a really nice looking 83 GSL

Drums or disks in the back? Drums mean it's a GS or LE model, where non-vented disks mean it's a GSL; therefore, GSL's would have LSD rear end, power options (windows, steering, etc), and both would have 4x110 wheel bolt pattern.

It's not a GSL-SE, as the SE's have 4 wheel vented disks, LSD rear, larger 14" wheels (in 4x114.3mm bolt pattern), and most importantly the larger 13b fuel-injected engine.

Also, as buyer of the Mode 4 ground effects parts for my car, your car looks to have never been touched by Mariah Motorsports. Mariah was in the business of doing conversions on these cars back in the late 80's and very early 90's for customer-specified builds including convertible top, widebody (Mode 1 conversion), narrow body w/ground effects (Mode 4 conversion), and various iterations in between. Once the work was performed by Mariah Motorsports, they removed all Mazda badging and put "Mariah" badging in it's place in the front and rear, including a center-valance mounted emblem, which the Mazda's never had coming from the factory. Mariah Motorsports also did performance upgrades including wheels, suspension (stabilizer bars, shocks, springs), and interior such as wood steering wheels and shift *****, seats, and leather for customers who ordered it. All of the Mariah Motorsports body pieces are gel-coated fiberglass, including the rear hatch and the Flying Whale Tail spoilers.

I'm thinking the person you bought it from probably looked at pictures online and figured they could make more money on it by telling people that it's a 'Mariah' conversion, which it ain't. That's a Mazda Factory Race (as now sold by Mazdatrix) ABS plastic front spoiler which mounts under the stock bumper, though it does appear to have low mileage and is in good overall condition.

Good luck in your 'flip', and please be honest in how you list this; most buyers of these cars will know what they're looking at when they come to see it, and if you tell them it's an -SE, and they see what we see, they're going to be pretty pissed about being misled.

Then it's a GSL, which also means it has the LSD rear-end which is valued among rotorheads!

The fact that it has such low mileage means it's a keeper, and it also looks to be in great shape from your pictures. It would make a great collector car if you choose to keep it, and if not, then I'm sure there are plenty of guys who had these cars in their past that would value it enough to own one again. I'm always surprised at how many people that see my car and say, "I used to have one of these way back when..."

As mentioned over PM - good luck with it, whatever you choose to do with it.

My plan is to finish with the "get it going project" got i running, now replace slave cylinder.

Then proceed with new tires and replace pads, possibly rotors and if needed calipers.

I want to drive it for a bit and if I like it, I'll keep it. If not let somone else enjoy it.

From the look of it, I think I will enjoy it

My question to you is.

What exactly is the body package from it then???

The body package is; GSL with a Targa Band (rare) and a Mazda Factory Race front spoiler.

A few months back there was a thread here where people were hunting for those Targa Bands because they were a really unique look from back in the day. It seems that it was a Mazda Dealer option to be added to the car, and a lot of people ended up taking them off - so it's rare to find one installed and original - which yours appears to be.

The GSL's were built to bridge the gap between the 'entry-level' versions of the RX-7 and offer a more performance-oriented car for people that wanted those options. Remember that back in 1983, Mazda had been winning in IMSA competition and several other classes, and the cars were really gaining a following, not to mention that Mazda was in direct competition with Porsche's 924 model. The introduction of the GSL gave 4-wheel disk brakes for better braking performance, included many of the power options, and added an LSD to the rear, which was requested by performance drivers and also improved cornering speed and 0-60 times.

As a collector car, or even as a daily driver, the 83 GSL model is probably the premiere 12a-engine car to own, since it has the reliable and plentiful carb'd engine (with lots of performance add-on parts designed for the prior model years), better brakes and diff, and was the precursor to the 84/85 GSL-SE's, which packed on a lot of extra weight when they moved up to the 13b engine.

As a sidenote, on your clutch slave cylinder replacement - you may want to consider rebuilding your Clutch Master Cylinder as well, since it's pretty common that once you beef up the weak link, the next weakest link will go out soon after, and that's your old Clutch Master Cylinder. Rebuild kits work well enough if you don't want to have to return a core, but expect to leak some brake fluid inside the car. Also, those 2x12mm nuts on the inside of the firewall that hold the Master Cylinder in place are a PITA to get to.

Good luck, and that GSL is a great find.

awesome so its sorta a rare find haha as for the cylinder i already got a new one :/, I got some conenctions to get discounts on parts

Though ill look into a rebuild and i will look into those nuts as well in the firewall.

Thanks for the help I feel a lil better I can't wait to get her on the road

hope to meet up with some other rx7 owners and cruise and get some photos taken
