Kudos to me ...
I finally got the beast running today. it was spitting and sputtering at first and then climed to 2k rpm. Running strong but too high, so I started looking for the vaccum leak. Found it plugged it and now it lopes and sounds like it is missing and backfiring every few seconds. Does this mean out of time (when I turn the dizzy to adjust it gets worse in both directions) or could it be a fuel problem or even a nub is blocked that should not be?
Also the water temp gauge is not working at all, any suggestions on an afm replacement that isnt too expensive. By the way this is an 85 12a in an 84 gs body... heres the list of mods... RB header strait pipes (loud as all hell) ac removal heater removal emissions removal flex a lite fan replacement high delivery fuel pump w/ regulator custom oil cooling lines TIA Peace |
After running it, what do the plugs look like..and did you pull any wireing harness's wires, or any other electrical
plugs,wires, etc,,, ??? back-fires,,,,,timing ?? |
make sure your carb is set on mixture and idle speed correctly. make sure the dizzy advances aren't capped if you've removed those lines. make sure your plug wires are all hooked up right, coils and plugs.
water temp guage, you can get an autometer like mine pretty cheap. |
(off topic post)
You're in Valdosta? My little brother is there as special police for the AF. I'll be bringing his Camaro down there in a few weeks, we should meet up, maybe take a run... |
Blue Goose - we should be able to work something out, I should have it tuned by then
mark perez - The engine had atf in it during shipping and I used some old plugs to get her started, when I pulled them they were powder black jeremy - havnt had much luck setting the fuel or timing (shipping co bent the pulleys on the motor and I had to swap and the timing marks are not the same peace |
thats because those damn pulleys dinged my driver's door. they had it coming, lol.
|
lol, so is there another way to set timing (other then by ear) such as find TDC and make my own marks? (By the way I have heard the phrase "top dead center" on our cars but what is it ?)Went by to start it today and tinker but it will only run for about 30 seconds (WTF) so I really cant do much

|
mar3 - Looking at the front of the engine, there are three marks. What are the colors supposed to be from left to right? Thanks for the link.
Also do I need to hold the clutch down if I need to remove the hub, or is that just for the 2-3 gens? peace |
I'll take a look at my '84 and post a little later...I don't know off the top of my head...
|
Looking at the windshield from the front of the car and then looking at the pulley. Only two cuts in pulley. One has red dabbed in it, the other one which is to its left is dabbed with what could either be white or yellow. Looking at the Haynes, I don't know if this is correct, though. It is a rebuild, after all...sorry, I struck out on that one...:(
|
they should be red and yellow
yellow is the trailing timing, I do beleive, and red is the leading timing... Jeff |
I definately thank you for the effort, it is apprecieated.
peace |
keeponlaffen - so the order from the left to right while standing in front of the car is yellow then red, correct?
peace |
I don't know the order, but they're red and yellow, I know that much.
I would assume that the person who rebuilt your engine would've put the marks back on properly (if he/she took them off ever) I don't want to go out and look 'cause it's pouring rain here.... :D Jeff |
pulleys
havnt had much luck setting the fuel or timing (shipping co bent the pulleys on the motor and I had to swap and the timing marks are not the same peace |
