keeping engine warm...

ok, winter is almost here and i really hate how my car stays freakin cold. now i do the little block the airflow to the radiator trick and that works while i'm driving, but how can i keep my engine bay warm i guess, so when i come back to the car 20 minutes later i dont have to hold the choke. ? any ideas? hahaha

TheTwinTurboRX-7 09-29-03 01:58 AM

get a block heater, not that expensive and very easy to install

FB II 09-29-03 01:59 AM

really??? hell yea! where can i get that from? hahaha! i'll check summit. how exactly does that work?

FB II 09-29-03 02:19 AM

k, think i may have found what i am looking for?? how does this work, and i dont want to have to plug my motor in to the wall every time i park. LOL

jegs heaters and faceula

peejay 09-29-03 04:05 AM

hold the choke? whyfor? the engine shouldn't cool down that much in 20 minutes.

TheTwinTurboRX-7 09-29-03 04:35 AM

if you get a block heater you do have to plug it in, that is how it works, you plug the car in and it circulates the water through the block and through the electrical coils in the heater keeping the water warm.

ok, that will work well for the mornings. :P:

peejay; when its 20 derees here it doesnt take long at all for me to have to need the choke. and since my choke wont stay out i have to hold it. and that is just annoying.

Switch to an electric fan with a thermostat that way when she gets restarted it won't blow cold air thru the radiator and oil cooler, which makes it take longer to warm back up.

Here is the lowest tech answer you can get that will work and it will only cost you a dime...actually, you just use that freakin' dime to prop the choke open inside the car. Pull the choke knob, stick the dime in there and let it close on it. The dime has the smallest diameter of all American coins and it's about a 1500 rpm idle with that shadetree trick. At least it was for my '79 and '80...

And to all the coin guys out there that will now correct me or try to, you can bite my shorts right now, haters...:p:

You can use a small piece of rubber hose split down the side to hold it open too :).

I've used a binder clip to hold the choke open.

I keep a penny, a dime and a quater in my change slot for varying weather conditions. I lost the magnetic choke when I used the sensor hole for my water temp sensor. Works fine.
