coz ive seen this pic before

kotkovetz 01-08-04 07:32 AM

he never said it was his...

Anyways, What year did that cluster come from? Is that a second gen? I have a 1980 and want to change out my cluster or get something custom made, any info about that picture would be great. Thanks

MarkPerez 01-08-04 01:10 PM

that is different,, if it works.

faye x7 01-08-04 01:34 PM

How the hell did the guy get that cluster in there?

81Rex6port13b 01-08-04 02:50 PM

what is it from?

gonzz 01-08-04 02:58 PM

I think it's from a 89-91 2nd Gen. I got a 89-91 cluster last night and will try it this weekend. If you look close at the tach I believe I see 8-1000 rpm increments which has to be a 89-91 cluster. 88 and below I believe went to 7K redline. I will let everyone know how it goes. Once I get it in wiring is the easy part..

Rutnick 01-08-04 03:01 PM

come on dude...cough up the details. I have a 1980 too and I would like to know what you have going on there.

Suparslinc 01-08-04 04:06 PM

FYI it's illegal to swap instrument clusters. odometer tampering and all that.

Rutnick 01-08-04 04:08 PM

not in my state it isn't. You just have to document the change and the mileage.

gonzz 01-08-04 07:53 PM

My title has odometer exept so what can happen? If you have a car that is 24 yrs old you think they care?

Suparslinc 01-08-04 08:54 PM

No. I didn't mean you were trying to pull a fast one. ;)

gonzz 01-08-04 09:26 PM

That's cool. all I said is my car is odometer exempt. So it shouldn't matter. It's the same as swapping out a cluster when yours goes bad.. what can they do?

81Rex6port13b 01-08-04 09:30 PM

i dotn see how a second gen 7 cluster would work. there a bit different in shape, and the plugs in the back are different.

so maybe is all custom. you can dismatle the cluster. and peice it back together on a 1st gen empty cluster maybe?

i have no idea. but it looks good. how ever that was done.

81Rex6port13b 01-08-04 09:31 PM

and another question is where did he get those pillar pods?

i have not ben able to find them. the only way i know is a CRX pods and heat gun it.

gonzz 01-08-04 10:45 PM

Well I got bored and tried it tonight. Can't believe how easy it was. Here is a peek.. Will finish project and wiring this weekend. Also going to get indiglo...

Not illegal in my state either. As long as you get it documented. Also, if you have a cluster that the odometer is removable, you can swap it with the original so that you still have the original miles. That's what I did with my other car when I swapped in a cluster with a tach (original cluster had no tach).

You have a 1980? Will you do a writeup on how you wired it and everything after you finish?

gonzz 01-09-04 09:31 AM

Ok, No Prob

purple82 01-09-04 10:01 AM

I'd like to just switch out the tach. Do you think that's possible?

rotary emotions 01-09-04 10:07 AM

The speedo in my car is of an FC (86 NA) and works as good or bad as the old one. I reset the odometer to the same settings as the original, and that'd make it legal.
The NA FC speedo also has the same inputdrive speed as the 81-83 1st gen. So there's no problem there: it still works the same way. It wasnt an easy fit though, and I suppose a cluster-swap might be easier, but then you would have to work on the wiring.

Directfreak 01-09-04 05:52 PM

I like it. Definately a great improvment over the stock 79-83 Dash's. Keep in mind guys, that you lose the warning light cluster.

kuhlrx7 01-09-04 10:02 PM

WOW that is incredible guys!! I love what was done to that.

but wait a minute thats my car in the pic. I should say that. there is quite a bit of work into doing this and its more than shoving it in to place and changing the wires in the plugs. alex is right do not forget the warning lights have their own cluster in the fc's. I mated parts from an sa cluster to a 91 cluster to make it work and plastic welded them together. Its a real tight fit. the pods are the ones for an 86-88 rx7
