Instruct me on how to make a 13sec FB

Well, I am searching for an FB to buy, and my goal for it is for the car to run mid 13's in the 1/4. Its not going to be a drag car by any means, but 1/4 mile times are good indication of power, which Io would think would be around 225rwhp, right? I assume that this cannot be done without some sort of forced induction, I posted a thread a few days ago about supercharging, that was my 1st choice. But I kinda need the car to remain street legal( Pass emissions), and If I got a gsl-se, I may have to carb it to supercharge it, which then it may not pass. I do not want nitrous, I just dont like it. Is there a relatively simple way to turbocharge the 13b in the GSL-SE??, or would I be better to swap in a 13bt out of a T2 fc? I think the 13bt swap would be a huge PITA , and I dunno if I wanna go that route. Anyone who boosted their FB, or can give me any good info, Id appreciate it, thanks.

gut it, get good tires. Do some work to the suspension to make it launch. Swap in a 13b/turbo with a good exhaust, you'll be in the mid/low 13s. 220HP, 2000LB

GSL-SE+ all mods+ 100 shot :D

stock 302 + slicks = 12's

Find a guy with a 13 second FB, then buy it from him.

You will need a bridgeport 13B to run 13's in an SE.

Now that was completely uncalled for. :D

There are a number of ways to skin the 13sec cat. If you're gonna go forced induction then the simplest way would be to just drop in a T2 engine. You could also run a stock/streetport engine and throw on some nitrous or go all out on a n/a 13B bridgeport either with a Weber or aftermarket fuel injection. All these options will get you in the 13's with ease.

82streetracer 06-01-02 07:03 PM

forget the 302 swap in a LT1 350 with a centrifigul supercharger like this guy insane 240 sx well its not a 7 but you get the idea. (big download but worth it!!!!)

IMO this is the coolest car I know of on the planet.
I cant think of a better/cooler car.
classic looks, insane power, sort of a sleeper other than the crazy exhaust sound and the 17 inch wheels.

stock 302 + slicks = 12's
com on. stop thinking about V8:piss: a rotary engine with a turbo can make 13 sec passes. and is lighter that a heavy 500 pound V8:piss:

MarkPerez 06-01-02 11:45 PM

hitting the low teens,is not just power,,it's making the
car stick too,,if you've got the $$$$$ by all means go
with the 13bt,,or if you just want power then go with
a V8,,a 5.0.., or a corvette all alloy,roller cam,LT1,,350,
5.7 Litre..either way it's gonna take bank for low teens..
and then to be able to drive it on the street, and pass smog,is a good trick too..think about it

Terrh 06-02-02 12:00 AM

another way:
sell the FB, use the money for your down payment on a FD or other 13 second car

Yet another way: swap in a renises

Another Way Number Three: Bridgeport. Don't worry about emmissions, you'll have to rebuild it by then.
Another Way Number Four: Buy a 11 second car and tow yours... :)

V8kilr 06-02-02 03:22 AM

here is an easy way

MarkPerez 06-02-02 11:53 AM

Where???,,,,yeah,,if you want low teens,,keeping the
car an RX7,,and with a rotory engine,,,= the answer is,,
a 3rd gen FD

peejay 06-02-02 01:24 PM

Why would you want an FD if you could have a 1st-gen?

yayarx7 06-02-02 04:49 PM

GSL-SE, high compression ported 13b, aftermarket FI, Supercharger, should get you 13's.

Rxmfn7 06-02-02 05:50 PM

Well, I may go the V-8 route *zips up flame suit*. True, Id rather keep it a rotary, but for the ptice involved in a rebuild and porting, then the supercharger...I could drop in a 5.0 for probably 1/3 of the cost. Love to have a supercharged -SE though. ANyone want to contribute to the "keep it a rotary" fund? ;) If not the car may be V-8 powered.

peejay 06-02-02 07:41 PM

Supercharger? You don't need forced induction if you're only looking for 13's.

I would look into that price thing again. Drop in a stock 302 and your looking at 200 or so horses, the wiring would be a nightmare if you used the stock FI, either way you need a tranny. then a custom driveshaft. shifter. You'd have to buy all the mounts and a new fuel system. then you need custom exhaust, a hood to clear the 302(maybe not), and you have a car only better for the 1/4 mile straight line run, not a better handler.

How much less could that be than a T2 motor/tranny. or a ported rebuild on your motor. Or a good used 88+ motor, start with 160+ horses, bolt on to 180+ hp, save up for a haltech to get you closer to 200+. When you got the dough port it for the last 50 horses.

I could be wrong on the cost numbers here, ask that guy with the Ford V8 in his car how much it ran him to do it, he runs somwhere in the 14's (we all think).

Winnipeg85GSL 06-03-02 03:32 PM

It does cost quite a few bucks I'll try to break it down.
Engine( complete rebuild of a 69 302 bored 30 over, pistons, rods, ported heads, larger valves, cam.
2900 (CANADIAN)
Shorty headers, edelbrock performer 289 aluminum intake, holley 650 4 bbl vacuum secondaries carb
650 ish
custom rad, driveshaft, mounts, electric fan
800
T-5 tranny, new clucth and pressure plate
400

So, thats 2900+650+800+400= $4750
$4750-$450(my engine)= $4300

U.S. funds = $2575

This could have been done for ALOT cheaper but I chose to spend some money. Should be 300HP at the flywheel and should do a mid 13 second pass with the crappy tires I have on right now and 12's with slicks. It all depends on how you look at it, the front doesnt really sit any lower and it looks like the car came with the engine.

Felix Wankel 06-03-02 03:35 PM

302s are a good setup for one. Front mounted dizzy and a relatively narrow and light block.

gamble302 06-03-02 03:50 PM

ive seen kerrys car, very very nice fit. 302 didnt change it much at all except of course the extra power. still handles fine too.
its not pricey at all really
-i can get a slightly used 302 with everything as far as the motor goes for 800 bucks easy in my area, so no shipping, with a nice t-5
-grannys kits for like 150
-driveshaft made up for cheap, 150s my guess
-clutch adapter stuff is about 80
-misc crap less than 500 for sure

its possible to do it cheaper than that too if you find great deals, barely over 1500 for the swap is no problem at all

gamble

You might want to do some research and check out some drag races before you start this project...

I caught Speedvision on ESPN 2 over the weekend and they were covering some import drag races. There was a FB in the "All Motor" class that was running low 10's. I saw this and my jaw dropped! (Unfortunatly they don't give you much info about the cars in these 1/2 hour shows. ) Did anyone else see these races? It was the one where Ari Yallon blew his motor...

Not sure what this FB was running, but I sure would like to know!

wozzoom 06-03-02 03:52 PM

Opps, Not low 10's. I meant low 12's

Felix Wankel 06-03-02 03:54 PM

Theres an all motor GSL-SE in the 10s, but its a 20B PP.

wozzoom 06-03-02 03:58 PM

I guess a NA 20B would do it! They never tell you the spec's on the car... just that it was in the all motor class. I believe the car in question was leading the points in the all motor class... I'm real curious about this guys setup. Anyone have any links?
