imsa/gtu sticker
on my 84 gsl-se, i have a round, gold colored sticker on the driver's side rear quarter glass that says 82-83 imsa/gtu champion, something to that nature. i have had an 85 gs with the same sticker. what does it mean and where does it come from? is it factory??
|
I always wondered that. my 83gs had that too....my 85's don't. hummm.
|
That is a factory sticker.
International Motor Sports Association was the sanctioning body of a race series. GTU is the class. GT under 3 liter I think the size was. GTO was for over 3 liters. Both classes raced on the track at the same time. Rotaries were legal for either class and GTO could use 3 rotor. Mazda dominated GTU for many years. That sticker is a celebration of it's success in racing and a sales point. ALMS bought the rights of the IMSA name and is continuing it's sports car racing heritage. i think they have it up to 87 or so

Mazda won the manufacture GTU class from 1980 thru 1986. The stickers were installed on US sold 1981 -1985 Rx-7 to celerbrate this accomplishment.
I am not sure if it was a factory installed sticker or of it was applied at the dealer. Remember is was a sticker so it could have be removed before you got the car. John |
Yeah the RX-7 spanked everyones rear and dominated IMSA Grand Touring Under class for many years.. so Mazda even named the FC after it
Thank you Brad for the tape last weekend :bigthumb: |
No Prob Mel :dragster: I have lots of tape.
Hope to go to the racetrack with you in the future. It was nice having some Rx7's at Buttonwillow to hand out with. 280z and 911, 914-6 were Rx7's biggest competition in GTU. |
I wonder if they are still availible by any source?
|
My 84SE has this same sticker, and it's a gold, round decal with the 81/82/83/84 IMSA wins listed on it. I have always left it there (factory installed since new) and thought that it was a neat testament to the rotary engine in racing.
My thinking is that the Mazda dealers used to add these stickers to help show the car's competitiveness against other types of sports cars, and it certainly doesn't hurt to show so many wins in consecutive years. I've never seen them available on-line, but wouldn't doubt that they're out there. |

Looking at the microfiche for the '84-85 models they show a sticker number for a emmission sticking in that location.
That would tell me that was a US dealer installed item, which should be a easy task for them to handle. Source of the sticker would be a good challenge for us all, cause I know we all would like several handfulls to put on our tool boxes and PeeChee folders. John |

maybe there is a mazda part number for these stickers?! i am really interested in this!!! i wonder if any fc guys have stickers on their cars? maybe we can get a stack.
|
Buy the whole windows!
|
lol... i dont get the big deal about these stickers.... so what?
|
It's on my '83 GSL also. I love that sticker. Wasn't on the two '82 GSL's I parted out though :(
|
I was looking at the IMSA history, and look at the second race in 1982. The RX-7's took 1st through 5th. That was all the RX-7's in the field.
It almost surprises me what kind of cars raced back then. I wish they would televise this stuff. After looking further, Mazda never even came into the picture untill the RX-7 came out in 1979. That just shows how good the RX-7 really is. |
Hopefully the Rx-8 can bring a winning streak back to Mazda Rotary fame.
It looks like it won't get classed in Speed World Challenge Touring but is allowed in SWC GT in supercharged form. Hopefully it'll do well in Grand Am too. http://www.theracesite.com/index.cfm...m_article=6173 |
Looks like this eh? I tried to get one off a junkyard car but that failed horribly. Especially after my friend shatted the window with his fist in a half-brained attempt to free the sticker.... Anyways, this is a pic of my own cars sticker I just had on the HD. Sorry for the glare, couldn't be helped. FWIW, the FCs also had a IMSA sticker, altough they weren't as dominant as the FB in IMSA IIRC. The sticker looks different as well, and IIRC it's on the rear hatch as opposed to the rear quarter glass on FBs.
