Idle problem

alright here's the problem. i have an 83 rx7 with a stock 12a in it. all is stock on the motor except exhaust. the car runs and drives perfectly...its just when i come to a stop the idle drops down super low. the engine is still strong so it manages to keep idle...but we're talking way below regular idle of 750. maybe like 400 or something. it stumbles like its about to die but it doesnt. it picks itself back up and then bumps up to about 1000rpm. then falls back down to about 400-500 for a few seconds, then back up to 1000rpm. and repeats itself. it also has trouble when i go from high revs down to idle it just dies. i was free revving it in the garage and everything was smooth but when i let it fall back to idle it just died. any thoughts, ideas? thanks.

i think i have fixed the problem. its seems to be idling a bit high now but we'll see. i replaced ignitors, cap, rotor, plugs and alternator (just cuz i had one with a dual sheave pulley on it laying around).

A bit high is way better than too low. Now, look up the carb adjustment procedure, and you can fine it down perfect.

Sterling did an excellent writeup on the procedure to tune the idle. Check it out:

Good luck. :)
