Idle issue on my SE
 

Ok. I have done a search, but have not found what I'm looking for.

Here is what me SE is doing.

At start up she idles really fast (3K) for about 20 seconds then drops down to the usual warm up idle speed. Cold Start

Sometimes when I'm driving as I down shift the idle stays at 2k, for again about 20 seconds then drops back to 750. When Hot.

Yesterday I drove to a store, came back out a few minutes later and drove away, she was sputtering for about 1 min, then drove fine. Hot Start.

Any ideas?

All stock.

Idk about the last 2 problems of yours, but i think all 7's with fuel injection idle that high on a cold start. Mine does, at about 2,500 - 3K rpm, but not for 20 seconds! More like 10 seconds then she's ready to rip.

it's never done it until recently, feels really high, and much higher than normal.

Check coolant level, Fuel filters etc? Other than that I'm just giving ya free bumps!

On cold start, the accellerated warm up is supposed to bump the rpms up to 3k for somewhere around 15 seconds. On the 2nd gens, this can be avoided by starting the engine in neutral, don't know if the SEs are the same.

Check the FAQs, there are a couple of links to troubleshooting SE idle problems. The 3k part of the warm up cycle can be disabled, and I recommend doing it. Never did like the idea of reving a cold engine that high on first start.

If you start having hot start issues, run some Seafoam through the tank. Hot start issues are usually leaking injectors, low compression, or both.

Trochoid the cold start disable is not covered in the FAQ's, or I need new glasses, would you mind covering it here? :fingersx:

Your right, it probably isn't. As i said, I'm not sure if the SEs are the same as the FCs in regards to disabling the 3k rpm step by starting in neutral. There is very little difference between the S3 and S4 throttle bodies and cold starts. The 2nd gen section may provide more info on it.

I have not worked on the SEs much, but have done quite a bit on my S4. I have read that there is a simple mod that disables the 3k, but I don't remember where I read it. I do know it is on the backside of the throttle body and needs to be removed to do it. It may be as simple as backing out one of the screws that contacts the step cam on the throttle plate shaft. Don't know for sure.

Cold start on the SE's run off a Fast Idle Cam, which contacts the throttle shaft proping open the throttle plates. The cam sits a top a wax pellet which when gets warm, melts, and slowly drop closing the throttle plates to their normal position.

you might wanna chk and see if there is any binding in the throttle linkage on either side of the TB. had a problem simular to this after i did the TB mod. with the engine turned off open the throttle and let it close slowly to see if there is any binding in it.
