How Is Your Battery Held Down?

Ok, I got a new battery for my car, but its smaller than the previous battery that was in there (the wrong battery). Anyway, this new small size moves around quite a bit. It wont short out on anything, but Im worried Im gonna accelerate up a hill or something, and its gonna fall off that platform and fall into my engine...Anyway, I looked at some universal battery hold down kits that are fairly cheap, I just wanted to see what you guys are using. Also, in all the RX-7s we have (4 of them), none of them have any signs of a stock hold down...Whats with that? Anyway, what do you use? Do you have pics of it?

~T.J.

PS - I planned on just getting one of those "J" bar setups (two bars up the sides with a top cross bar secured with wing nuts, typical setup) and drilling some holes in that platform for them, sound good?

Yeah, when I got my car it had a peice of rope holding it in. I had to make a batt hold down for a Warrant of Fitness. It's made out of an old TV ariel, looks fine, you can't tell and it works sweet. :)

My 85 GS has a factory hold down. Consists of three pieces of roundstock metal with angles welded on.

 You too? ;)

I picked up a stock battery holder from the junk yard. Cost nothing and it fit perfectly. :)

do you have a plastic tray that it sits on?

buy a strap from your local hardware store.'

lay the strap where the battery goes, lay the plastic tray over that, and screw it down. wrap the strap around the battery.

I got a black one with a chrome clamp and it looks great.

I have the stock hold down. It's got the threaded J rod with a top piece.. There's already holes down there for the J hooks. You just gotta find them.

Otherwise, just be like one of my friends... None of his cars have ever had a factory hold down.

First car used one of those rubber bungee cords...

Second car we had large zip ties holding it down. That battery died, so I gave him the one outta my RX-7.. It was taller, so we just let the hood hold it down, with the fiberglass insulation under the hood as an insulator. :D

The head gasket blew in that car, so I got the battery back... I was planning on getting an Optima Yellow top to replace it.

I am in the middle of a midlife crises using AutoCrap in my daily job

My (Grp51) battery is held in place by the great SS Tray and Hold Down that TurboJeff builds but i did have to provide my own J bolts

brownmound 11-14-02 05:36 PM

If you don't tie it down it will slide into the alternator pully which will dig a whole into your battery which will leak and make a big mess. Trust me, I know.

Right on.

Mazdatrix has the OEM setup if you want to spend the bucks for it (http://www.mazdatrix.com/n-5.htm) but I think you can get a generic one that will work cheaper.

12aPwr 11-14-02 05:53 PM

im using a bungy strap

Rx7carl 11-14-02 05:56 PM

The stock tray is already set up for j bolts. One tab has a hole, the one by the radiator just hooks underneath the tray. U get that stuff I sent TJ?

RotorMotorDriver 11-14-02 06:06 PM

Not yet...But I havent checked recently (its my Moms house). I will soon though.

my honest sincere answer is that i put an empty WD4 can under one side..sat it in the space where my radiator used to be with the other side propped up next to where the factory battery caddy is supposed to be.....so that i can have a radio while im restoring the car. :)

TJ,
I'm pretty sure my battery tie down is stock on my 83'. Just like Rx7Carl said....On one side it just slips in through a hole in the radiator duct, and on the other side it hooks down below:

Directfreak 11-14-02 11:43 PM

Hmm..

I was curious, because I can't put a battery box around mine, it's too tight a fit. The "J" hooks I bought just plain suck.

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...postid=1125752

I am looking for a good secure alternative.

My battery holder is stock just like in FD Racers pics. I cut out holes in the corners of the plastic tray so any water can escape.
A friend of mine used a pair of the longest hose clamps he could get in his Rustang. :D

pk7tanner 11-15-02 12:25 AM

A bungy chord.

RotorMotorDriver 11-15-02 01:26 AM

Im gonna look into the stock setup (from a junk yard of course), or just go with the double J hook idea...Ill keep you posted. Ill probably do it tomorrow.

Today's been picture day :)

On my third gen I successfully mounded the battery behind the driver's seat using some eyehooks and some J hooks. You simply drill a hole through the floorboard and install the eyehooks, then hook the J hook to them and run something over the top. You can even bend the J hook to compensate for the slant of the floorboard:
