iv been usin a wire brush on the air compressor to get most of the main stuff can i use a acid to get the hard to reach places

Kentetsu 04-23-06 03:42 AM

Acid should take the rust off, but are you planning on having them rechromed?

trochoid 04-23-06 03:57 AM

Chrome will look good, as long as the engine is never started. lol Try some stainless steel polish. I didn't realize you had the RB ones in your PM.

fcdrifter13 04-23-06 04:23 AM

You you could spend countless hours moving from one grit to another to get it mirror like.

rxtasy3 04-23-06 08:50 AM

best thing to do is have it blasted and then powder coated with a chrome like finish. u can check out the eastwood.com site for THEIR color choices. companys that do powder coating may have other choices.

trochoid 04-23-06 11:37 AM

Powdercoat will not hold up, the standard ones begin to soften at 250*. Some of the ceramics will not hold to the heat of a rotary exhaust either. Coating needs to be rated at 2000*. In that range, there are no shiney ones that I have found.

If the coating is applied, it needs to be done on the inside, or both inside and outside. The coating is for heat modulation, not bling.

Leave it as is and just put header wrap, looks much better!

Dan_s_young 04-23-06 11:53 AM

Header wrap = trapped moisture, trapped moisture = rusted header

As hot as our headers get I dont think moister stands a chance. Besides a bought headers from a buddy who had his wrapped and they held up beautifully, NO rust! I just bought new wrap and they look better than ever!

fcdrifter13 04-23-06 01:21 PM

I am going to have my turbo mani ceramic coated on the inside and some kind of powder coat on the outside.

dbragg 04-23-06 01:22 PM

i used silver high heat paint from autozone. its rated to 2000* i believe and cost $5. my whole engine bay is done in black and silver.

do you have a pic with the wrap i dont want it to look out of place chrome and black is my theme to

Latin270 04-23-06 04:07 PM

I'll try to get a pic. Looks kick-ass to me!

blwfly 04-24-06 09:51 PM

so does anyone know where to get the acid and what type it is? and how its aplyed?

i might try a rust killer first

trochoid 04-24-06 10:06 PM

Unless you are dealing with a stainless steel header, you are wasting your time, steel will never stay polished up due to heat and moisture. Btw, acid and eat/etch metal, then you will have that much more polishing to do.

blwfly 04-24-06 10:09 PM

i figured this'
thats why i might try a rust killer and wire brush for now since everything will burn off compared to its wicked heat

Directfreak 04-24-06 11:50 PM

Just Wrap 'Em.
