high idle

long story. heres the short. the little accelerator pump lever broak at the botom of carb at butterfly i replased it with one from my 85 now i can hardly start it and when i do my idle is about 3000 i tried the adj screw to close the butterfly that didnt work.also have been fighting the distributor /timing . yellow mark and than dis marks alined what coud be the reason for all this ? every year come the cold i have numerous problomes

When you were mucking with the linkage, did you perhaps get something bound up on either the air conditioner solenoid or the dashpot? Either could cause a raised idle. With an idle speed that high, I'd think that if you looked down the primaries, the butterflies would be obviously open.

Are they?

as far as i know i dont think so . a air conditioner valve? i have no ac. dont think it ever had one the dashpot .it isnot preventing anything from closing althe way. i may have messed up the order of all the little arms and sutch on the shaft as i had to take it all apart but everything seems to link up with out being out of line. my manual doesnt show the order of the arms sequence. i can push up on the main arm.throtal part and it doesnot idle down. i did notice the anti afterburner . when i use to unplug it it woud make the engine run rough. but now it does nuthing .and it seems that there isnt mutch vacume forces going to alot of the hoses dont have any airflow . i dont know if this is new or old as i never realy noticed it b4. coud i have some how ajared say the 2nd deries open a bit .or coud bad apex sealing reve it up as its letting fumes pass threw? i notice it sounds like i have moore compression in the rearcylinder when i crank it with the leading plug out.when i do get it to run it goes down the road like nuthings wrong. useto be i coudnt keep a idle now i have tomutch. shoud i beable toturn the engine by just turning the altenatoras freely as i have been. i woud think theres moore compression than that . but i can

Well, for an idle speed that high, it has to be one of the following:

- Choke is stuck closed.
- Massive vacuum leak
- Throttle plates aren't closed, either due to adjustment screws or binding in the linkage when it was put back together. This is the most likely, given the fix you just performed. Check out this thread for an exploded diagram of the carb linkage and make sure everything is in the right place.

It's unlikely that poor compression would cause a high idle. Usually poor compression causes no idle. ;)

Good luck, let us know how you make out.

Sounds like something is jammed in the carby linkages you replaced which is preventing the throttle plates from closing all the way. One part being out of sequence can do something like that. I would be pulling the carb off and having a closer look from underneath. Look through the barrels while trying to close the butterflies by hand and see how far you get. If there is a visible gap, you have a problem. It's then up to you to find the source. A lot of those parts are redundant if you can remove the emissions gear, which may make your task easier.

welp i tore it all apart and found that yes a linkage arm closest to the accel pump arm was getting stuck and not letting it close 1 of 1001 problomes solved . so i re timed it like 20 times and finaly got it to kick over and run. runs rough andi do need plugs hard to find at the auto parts store its all special order even autolitesany way.so now i zoom zoom down the road and run into the same problom as before acting like its perging for gas . i mash the pettle and it will finaly catch up and still running rough. i cant imagine its starving for gas .i can sit there and idle and vroom vroom . it runs fine get a block or 2 away and its like its starving or cloged and my bet is them plugs they have a sharp tip on them from not being changed . if im lucky i can get the funds to get plugs. or coud it be that i have put a ignitor pack off my 85 on to my 80 even though it does work . i wonder if there is some difrence in them other than the 85 ignitors being smaller and are held on by only 1 screw. as far as the accel pump arm adj shoud it be screwed on just to the point of touching the pump diofram or not and does it have any efects if it is or not to tight. im use to using hollies on my autos and am not use to these rats nest and excessive things on a carb. but atleast it starts easyer now

If you have recently rebuilt the carb then that sounds like the common flooding problem. If not, just check your float levels but it sounds like something else.

For the accelerator pump adjustment you have it just about right - make it so it's already pressing against the diaphragm slightly. If you don't notice a slight hiccup when first opening the throttle, then don't worry about it.

ok tore back down put back togeather.wont crank at all. went over timming dried plugs exc readj floats again .i think i got it this time.lol.so here we are now a used s10 was lent to us on payments what we have when we have it . this is good as the only vehical that runs here is a salvaged title 2001 explorer sport with 3 year old tags. nice to live outa the city if ya know what im sayn. but the weekly trip to the big city coud cost .so i go out put bat in goldie and crank away . timing still off refix give it a lil gass crank a wayand starts yippe. choke arm fell and had to take arm of rod droped it man no roomon this car for my hands.so vroommm vroooom and a little sputer in the 4000rpm range. let off gas and dies.things to re check throtle plate screwwhen i changed them last i didnt gap the butterfly. thats got to b it.also noted that when myanti afterburner was unpluged b4 it woud run funny kinda like this but makes no difrence now. thinking a rat has been in my rats nest .lol need to check vacume shoud stop rainin today bacxk out i will go once again with my gas can in hand lol
