Heater core?
It's possible, at least on a 83. On my 83 removing the stereo surround and glove box gave me enough room to take it out, granted its a royal pain, but it can be done. Not sure about S3 though, that dash looks quite a bit more complicated.
I did it
once without removing the dash and less than a week ago by removing the dash.
You'll have to remove the carpet panels on both sides of the center console, your radio will come out. the passenger covers should come out, along with the glovebox.
Once down there it's easiest to remove the motor, and the middle box thing and finally the heater core. Cause they are LEGO'd together.
The heater core it's self is held on with 3 nuts. and one metal cable on the drives side for the control.
2 nuts on top, and the tricky one is hidden behind the middle box against the fire wall holding the brass lines centered in the firewall holes.
Thats it
removal takes awhile cause of everything being kluttered. But the more **** you get out of your way the easier the job gets.
Give it a shot.
(P.S) the ducts are held in place with a plastic tab that you must pull out.
and the top to nuts are behind the center dash vents way up at the top.
There is nothing holding the bottom.
Now that you know all this it should be quite easy

So the A/C Needs the heater core to work?
If so, then I guess it stays..
Yea you could take the heater core out of the box and block the holes, but like was said earlier its not worth it. I'm removing the A/C in a similar fashion on my project GS, but then again the entire interior is coming out of that car to do a proper color change, so its really no big deal.
