I finally ended my long streak of FD's yesterday with the purchase of a 81 GS from a forum member. I drove 14 hours round trip to get it and made it home safely. With the help of another forum member 1mzfe, I started cleaning it today. I am hoping you can tell me more about it. I have had countless 2nd and 3rd gens, but only 2 FB's before that ended up being parted out.

What I know:
1981 GS
Black on Black
85 GSL rear end from a Auto
Wed 15x7 wheels with Falken Ateza's
FD Base cloth seats with brackets (Replaced with Leather ones I had spare)
GTU style spoiler
New waterpump, alternator, rebuilt Niki carb, K&N air and oil filters
12a in great looking shape + new clutch
12a header (road race), silencers, another silencer, and a crappy $20 muffler (will be replacing)
Glass sun roof

It needs paint, to be reassembled, and about 50 other million things sadly. I am debating keeping it after the 1/4" bondo I found on the rear. Its a straight, mostly rust free shell. I will be switching to a 2nd gen ignition, fuse box, front mount oil cooler, ect.

Nice car. Engine looks clean. Good luck getting it cleaned up and put back together.

Jeff20B 09-05-09 11:48 PM

That's a good project for you. Don't part it out. Get it running and driving instead. Oh and don't let it any FB parts enter into your packrat area. Turn over a new leaf and keep it in a packrat free zone or something. lol Congrats! I have an '81 as well!

The Spyder 09-06-09 01:39 AM

Jeff, its been years since I have seen you. You should come down to the BBQ on the 26th, I would love to be updated on your projects.

No more packrating parts, I swear.

Does the header/silencers look like anything? Theres no name on them. The car was a steal and I figured its worth saving, if not for me, my brother.

FirebirdSlayer666 09-06-09 08:09 PM

Header looks like it could be a Racing Beat but the rest of the system looks either old aftermarket or custom. +1 on the clean motor. It's either an 83+ motor or they for whatever reason abandoned the factory FMOC for the beehive under the filter there. Congrats

The Spyder 09-06-09 09:49 PM

Its a 83+ engine if I recall, however he left everything (minus the radiator and oilcooler) for the swap in the car. I have a FC oil cooler and am tracking down a radiator now.

Mounted the Leather FD seats today. Trying to decide if I should keep the base seats and sell my R1 suede seats, or just sell them. Im kinda broke ATM.

The Spyder 09-06-09 09:50 PM

Oh and there were 4 spark plugs when we left his house... oops.'
What plugs should I run? I have NGK's layin around.

jinxed4dub 09-07-09 05:15 AM

If you do the 2gdfis run second gen leading plugs. its worth the extra money. there only 7 bucks at shucks and you only need 2, NGK's are the only way to go either way. I run stock trailing plugs. Good luck with your new FB. stock NGK plugs worked fine though. and I think I got them for like 3 bucks each about 6 months ago.

Can I help put it together if its here in oregon? thats if you don't mind help. I'm not looking for money, Just down to help.

i say keep the car...i love my fb...just add new carb or have sterling rebuild your nikki...also...recently Lloyd installed a fc fmoc on my car with an alternative method, using no welding of brackets, he actually used the stock fc brackets i think

i want that spoiler to lol

The Spyder 09-07-09 11:22 PM

Theres one for $40 in WA craigslist, I was surprised.

Who/what/why made this spoiler? Was it a factory option?

theFBthatcould 09-08-09 07:13 PM

ya i believe it was a factory option on the earlire modles they went with the rear and side window spoilers the ones that liik like on a datsan

The Spyder 09-09-09 04:29 PM

Going to start the body work today- shouldnt be bad.
Other then my head is still spinning from getting my wisdom teeth out.

jinxed4dub 09-10-09 01:39 AM

So sounds like your keeping it. Like I posted before I'm down to help for free if you need a hand. I'm sure you got things covered. I'm just board and have no moneys to work on fixing my car at the moment. Give me a call if you still have my number, if not let me know and I'll pm it to you.

The Spyder 09-10-09 08:49 PM

Send me a PM-
IF I feel good tomorrow I am going to strip + reshoot it black since I have half a gallon left. :)

Found a thread from the org owner from years back! Check out the difference!

The wheels are Auto Bahn by WED. Looks like they are rare as heck.
