GSL-SE water pump temp sensor
 

Anybody know if the GSL-SE rear water pump sensor is compatible with a 12A system? I know the sensor has a different plug and thread size but will it work electrically? Here's what I'm doing.

I installed a Rotary Aviation OMP adapter and I'm not pleased with it because on a 12A it pushes the oil lines to close to the bottom water pump outlet and crimps them. Neither the maker of the pump, Richard Sohn, nor Rotary Aviation could help find a solution. I do have to say that Rotary Aviation did have good communications but could but could not offer any help. Other have had the same issue with 12A pump adapters. I could not suggest converting to the pump unless your will to make many changes. I've sunk over $300 in the conversion alone.

I'm putting a GSL-SE water pump housing on my 12A GSL. The GSL-SE water pump housing gives more room when installing a Rotary Aviation OMP adapter. I'd rather not have to tap the hole bigger and just use the GSL-SE sensor and just splice in the GSL-SE plug.

I will be doing a complete write up with pictures of the before and after water pump housing swap.

The 13B sensor is not the same as the 12A. I know, I just busted mine replacing the water hoses LOL

You only need the 12A sensor if you're still using the electric holder in the choke knob housing.

The GSL-SE waterpump should have the same dimensions as the 12A. This means it won't work with the RA unit either. It probably only works with a GSL-SE OMP which uses four banjo bolts thus giving more room between the water inlet pipe.

Ever think of trying an S4 NA waterpump? Not sure how well it would fit your situation, but it uses the same water temp sensor as the GSL-SE, not that it helps you. But the water inlet might be at a slightly different angle.

In my mock up between a 12A and GSL-SE water pump housings, the only difference is the GSL-SE sensor hole is smaller, there is an nipple on the back by the sensor to supple water to something, and the bottom water outlet is shorter and does not turn in toward the OMP.

the 12A uses a switch to turn off the magnet that holds the choke knob out, whereas the 13B has a temperature sender for the ECU. so they are completely different in function.

like jeff says, if you're not using the choke, then you don't need it at all

I just bought an S4 water pump housing to see how it will fit. Couple of questions for this that have done this conversion.

1. How do you plug the extra hole on the that attaches it to the front cover that the 12A does not have. On a 12A, this make a direct path to water. (top right hole in pic)

2. How did you attach your 12A air pump. I'm keeping mine and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to attach it.

Answer to 2. Looks like I need the upper and lower air pump brackets from an S4 now. I didn't do my home work on this. I never payed attention that it used a special bracket for the upper mount. Anybody got the upper and lower air pump brackets for an S4?

Looks like I also need to purchase some more powder to powder coat them. Dam project never ends. Its been going for 13 years now. I haven't driven the car in over 10 years.

Sounds like you would prefer to drive it rather than keep working on it. I know what that's like. Maybe it's time to give up on the RA thing and go with what works.

Just purchased the entire S4 air pump with brackets from rotary_resurrection. I'll re-tap the water temp sensor to accommodate the first gen one and also tap and plug the extra hole on the front cover side. I'm going to run the S4 water pump and pulley.

I've also customized the factory water pump housing to make it work. This way I can see which housing will work best. I like the S4 one better because of the weight reduction. I cut the outlet neck off and welded in a piece of stainless tubing. Notice how it is straight now. I also powder coated.
