Hey everyone! Thought I’d share a five letter project me and my buddy are working on right now! 86k on the clock, not in show car shape but its there haha. The e-brake cable snapped on it unfortunately and the clutch master cylinder seems to be seized or broken, those are the problems we have encountered so far…
Welcome aboard. What are your plans for it? (*God, please don't let him reply, "LS swap",...)
NEVER! The plan is to get it running and to fix it up a bit, Its not in the best shape and is not a show car by any means but thats what I have my other SE for haha
Looks like it will make for a very nice driver! With a little work, I think it will be a great car!!
That's the hope! its a bit rough around the edges but once we get it running it should make for a good driver. Its been sitting for the past 20 years in a field so there's a long ways to go yet haha!
hey all! troubleshooting with the se. it has new fluids, has spark, has fuel, seems to have compression since it has run off of starting fluid, so what could it be? the tps is a bit cobbled together and will have to be replaced but before I pull the trigger on that I want to know if it is worth it. Any ideas? its missing the exhaust but I don't think that would effect it. thanks!
What exactly is the issue? Is it not starting? Is is starting but stalling? Does it idle? Does it idle but won't drive? Unless I missed something here, it would help if you state exactly what the problem is.
Hey all! sorry about the vagueness! it will just crank and crank and crank, it makes no effort to try and run. All new fuel lines and new spark plugs. Im kinda stumped on why it at least is not trying to idle... forgive me for my lack of knowledge, first project car besides my other se but that one is not as much of one lol.
It has spark, and I checked the coils and they are working as they should too, new spark plug wires as well. Ok that may work I will definitely give it a shot! I thought since it sputtered a bit and tried to idle when I sprayed some starting fluid down there that it has compression... new fuel pump pushing the correct amount of fuel as well. I will try that method! thanks!
@Qingdao I think it may be, im not sure how to go about figuring that out though....
Its easy. Yet hard to describe. I'll try.
If you're off by a lot then stab the distributor.
First get the engine at TDC. This means an apex seal is passing the leading spark plug hole. Doesn't matter which rotor, its a wasted spark system.
Then take the cap off the distributor. Line up the little ninja star looking thing (reluctor) with the magnetic pickups. One of the magnetic pickups will be marked with an "L". Thats the one you want to line up with.
If you're off by a wee bit you can use a timing light to check it on the front cover. Your front cover should have a little wire sticking out right above the front output near the drive pulley. The drive pulley will have a notch in it. Paint the notch and run the light.
There is also a way of checking timing with the flywheel, but I can't recall how to do it.
Have you performed a proper compression test with a rotary compression tester to determine if the engine is good? After cranking the engine are you removing the spark plugs to see if they are fouled with gas? This will tell you if you have fuel to the engine and that the injectors are working.
@Qingdao I appreciate that! definitely something I will check on, the car idled for a very brief moment with starter fluid being sprayed into it, I did do a check and it is getting the correct amount of fuel pressure to the engine. The engine used to flood but after I replaced the spark plugs that seemed to take care of most of it, if I recall a couple of them may have had some on the threads but thats about it. I think my next step will be ordering a compression tester. I need to monitor my other se too so it's worth it. I cleaned the injectors but I may take it apart and clean them again. Any recommendations on a compression tester? thanks!
Rotary Compression Tester (RCTV5.2) is the unit you want, it's "out of stock" right now, but that's not unusual for this tester. Contact the seller and find out when he will have them in stock again, they may be waiting for parts to build another batch. I've also seen group-buys from time to time on the RX7 Forum.
I will have to do some poking around and see when his next batch is. I also saw them on an official website rotarycompressiontester.com that they are available, can I buy from there as well?
Their showing them as "sold-out" when you look them up on the website. The compression testers are built in Australia and the shipping is usually more than the tester. That's why when they have them on eBay you can avoid the shipping costs.
You can also go to www.rotarycompressiontester.com and buy one directly from Steve. They do run out of stock from time to time due to parts sourcing, but Steve is pretty darn good at getting the parts and making more. The one thing people often forget is that Steve builds each and every one by hand and they do take a little bit of time to come back in stock. But you are getting a quality product at a very affordable price.
