Grinding from tranny?

so when i was driving the rx7 from taking it out to show some friends, right under the shifter/ in the tranny it started randomly squeaky then stopping. So i didnt think much of it. then randomly it started squeaking real hard/loud and stayed. so i got home as soon as i could and parked it. after takin the neon out and playing some cod, i got home and decided to test it again and it still squeaks loud and u can sorta feel it in the shifter. is there something wrong with the tranny? could something have possibly fallen into it or could it be because the flywheel is rusty? im confused here, im not scared of dropping the tranny and doin a rebuild, just confused of what it is. its an 83 engine.

Is it a squeaking or grinding noise?

When does it do it?

food7373 11-21-09 05:17 AM

its kinda both, not as much a grinding but not all squeaking, when idling there is none of it, but when revved up, it seems to go up with the revving.

Plastic shifter bushing?

food7373 11-21-09 10:04 AM

i dont know much bout trannys, waht do u mean by that? do u mean the rubber thing that goes round the bottom of the shifter before goin into the tranny?

j9fd3s 11-21-09 12:14 PM

does it make the noise when the car is in neutral? or does the car have to be moving?

if the car has to be moving sounds like a driveshaft u joint

food7373 11-21-09 01:58 PM

low rpms dont have the sound, just when the rpms go up, doesnt matter if its in neutral or not. when it revs, the sound goes up with it

food7373 11-22-09 12:14 PM

bump

so the car can be stopped? in neutral? doesnt matter if the clutch is in or out?

if yes to any of that, its probably not the trans

yeha, but it sounds like its coming from right below the shifter, and i can feel it in the shifter too.

noise = vibrations, and those transmit.

if you are stopped, there isnt anything in the shifter thats moving, however it could be something attached, like the exhaust, or something on the front of the engine that is spinning.

food7373 11-23-09 02:16 PM

hmm, i didnt think of that, do u think something couldve of fallen into the transmission and got lodged in there? could something have fallen in from around the slave cylinder ?. and what do you mean by the exhaust spinning?

Rx-7Doctor 11-23-09 02:50 PM

He did not state that the exhaust was spinning!

He said that it could be something on the front of the engine......... Meaning the alternator, water pump and or smog pump if it is still on there could be making the noise.

A rotational noise.

The exhaust could be rattling also. There is a factory support bracket that attaches the exhaust to the transmission area. Or the exhaust is hitting something underneath.

You need to put the car up on some car ramps or jack stands and get under there when it is running to see if you can located the noise.

As far as falling into the transmission or around the slave, no!

To eliminate the possibility of it being a rotational noise such as the alt, etc you can just take the belt off and run it for a minute and so and tell whether or not the noise goes away.

haha, thanks man, once it stops raining around here i will jack it up and locate the noise. i will also check the exhaust. thanks.

actually if you didn't use the right length bolts in the slave cylinder they can hit the flywheel.

basically if the car is stopped, then the transmission isnt moving, and if its not moving then its not going to make a noise.

hmm, didnt think bout that, i used the ones from the stock one, but i will shave them when i get home or untighten them a small amount to see if it changes anything.

ahhh, thank you very much.

May be a bearing in the transmission is going bad. Mine was doing that and when I changed the oil in it, the drain plug was covered with lots of tiny metal shavings. I took it out and dropped it off today to have it rebuilt.

blwfly 11-30-09 10:30 PM

trow out bearing could be worn
i would check the drain plug as above

food7373 12-01-09 06:00 AM

i will check drain plug today, its gonna be up on some stands today, so i will do that while its up.
