glowing red hot manifold

The manifold gets RED hot and the car backfires also the plugs keep getting gas on them. The car is a 84 12a 80k miles, was running fine just last week. I took off the first 2 cats and hollowed out the third but nothing yet. What can I do? please help.:tear: :tear:

jonfc3s 02-26-03 05:39 PM

u probably are running to lean,... all the manifolds get red hot, and backfiring usually occurs when there is either an exhaust leak, or the cats are blown,......

specRX7_22 02-26-03 05:55 PM

that backfiring could also be the shutter valve. oh, and you said you took off the first 2 cats and hollowed out the third... did you mean you removed the first one and hollowed out the main? theres only 2 cats, the pre-cat and the main.

Kouki_1st_Gen 02-27-03 12:30 AM

lol... maybe he took off the 2 cats and hollowed the muffler. jk.

specRX7_22 02-27-03 01:36 PM

lol thats what i was thinking

Although, most 7's have two cats, the '84 and '85 have three. Two pre-cats and one main cat. That is how it is on my '84 SE. I too had the red hot manifold once too. I adjusted the timing and it went back to normal.

""the plugs keep getting gas on them. """

I'd be looking for a "rich" condition. Exhaust is extra hot because extra gas is being burned outside the engine.

second that, racermike.

thanks guys

Whats the fastest solution to this problem?

racermike 02-28-03 04:38 PM

I'm guessing you don't actually know what the problem is yet?? Can you determine if it is just running rich? does the carb dump gas when you shut it off? Is there gas running over ANYWHERE in the carb (secondaries)?? Do all 4 plugs get wet or 1 rotor and not the other?? What do the plugs look like when you check (besides wet)?? How does the car run/behave??

84+85rx-7 02-28-03 08:10 PM

dumps gas when turning off,4 plugs get wet, black plugs after few days, currently the car just backfires when idling. definetly running rich dont know how to correct that neither.

racermike 03-01-03 08:41 AM

Check or replace the pressure regulator (return gas line) and the line itself for any obstruction. If the return is not blocked, you probably have float issues in the carb. Does gas come out both sides?? You MIGHT be able to run carb cleaner through it to get it cleaned up.

gsl-se addict is correct..

the SE's have 3 cats.. and the "red hot" manifold is due to poor timming.
-had the same issue with mt SE.. and it was resolved by adjusting the timming.

he has an SE? but he has a CARB? the 3 cats? im guessing there are a few possibilities. he has a gsl and hollowed out the muffler. or he has a se that has been carbed.. OR well watever im jsut sorta confused wich is it?

He does have a 12A/carbed gsl. However, since it is a 1984, it has three cats. To my knowledge, all Rx7s produced as 1984 or 1985 models have three catalytic converters.
