how is the gas mileage on a 1985 rx7 FI???

This question has been asked a lot of times, you need to learn how to use that nifty Search button at the top. ;)

But, if tuned properly, with the right mods, you can see 26mpg (HWY), 20mpg (combined). Not sure about city, as it all varies.

It would be a good idea for you to read the FAQ forum.


Also recommend that you either download a copy of the FSM (see my signature) or buy a Haynes manual for reference.

Some people get low (12-16) up to 30 - depends on tune, state of engine, etc.
I get around 22-24 but I have the 12a, sounds like you have the 13B if you have FI - and I would expect it to get better mileage than mine (my 88 did).

Heh... Mine got about 14-16... But I think it was because the engine needs a lil TLC :P

this just seems impossible i used the search thing at the top and seeing the car weighs bout 2 lbs and has a small engine yet my F-150 4X4 5.0L gets 16 city???? why are these engines so inefficient??

It's a rotary. Not the best mileage in the world.

But, I hear the new rendition of the Renesis has direct port injection.

The 16X is going to be direct injection.

But, I think his question is... If some members are averaging 20-24mpg then why do some of our engines (mine included :( ) get like 10-16mpg?

There a lot of things you can do to improve mileage - but this isn't a honda civic....
I am afraid I have not worked with the FI you have - so can't suggest them to you - now a carb, I am becoming quite familiar with. However, if your mileage is low, I would bet it is because the car is old and has not been kept in tune. Start with the basics - plugs, wires, etc.

One of the main reasons the SE is not fuel efficient in the City is that it has a very poor fuel management system.

Only has 2 very large fuel injectors instead of the 4 that the 86 on up RX-7's have.
The O'2 sensor supposedly ( have not confirmed this) only works with the ECU when the transmission is in 5th gear. Has a 5th gear switch on the transmission.
Has a very high volume output fuel pump.

Biggest thing that seems to hamper the SE is the stock exhaust system. My mileage has always gone up when installed the RB header system.

However I have proven in my MPG thread about my Se that you can do mods to increase mileage.
My average City driving is 25 MPG
My average combo driving is 27.5 MPG
My average Highway driving is 28.8 MPG with a best of 31 MPG

I just filled up tonight so I'd have gas for the week, mind you, this was on a varied mix of calm driving and quite a few WOT's, but I got 24.6 mpg.

84 GSLSE, blaster coils, K&N drop in, BR8EQ14's, Racing Beat test pipe. Kinda floored.

Doctor- I have heard the same thing in my searching about o2 sensors.

Well its easy. You fill up your tank. Reset odometer. Drive. Fill up, take note of Litres of gallons put in (this means you know how much you burned for that mileage). Then take note of odometer reading and divide miles/gallons

OKAY now here is a question that will cause trouble i saw one other thread on it.

calmly explain how or how not the water4gas system would work. ive researched and found lots of answers from freefossilfuel on youtube. He has 81 videos on his experimenting. since it is only 50$ i will try it probably this summer seing that it wont kill me to spend $50 jsut to see if it works. I will post a thread on it after i try it for results. What on average would an 86 carb get if tuned properly? (MPG)

i would have to guess between 20 and 25.
