Question Fuel Injector cleaning?

How do you know if your fuel injectors need cleaning?

I heard that those over the counter cleaners aren't all that good at fixing a problem once you have it. Has anyone removed the injectors to be professionally cleaned?

$276(X2) for new injectors, OUCH!
Worth trying the cleaning.

This car has nearly 300K on the 6-port.
Replacing the TPS solved the surging problem, and the new O2 sensor smoothed out the idle as well as cleaned up the smokey (rich) tail pipe. This certainly has been educational.

For $500 I may have picked up another man's problems, but now this runs like a totally different car from the one I bought.

There is a company on the west coast called RC Engineering. They can clean and blueprint your injectors. They even have bigger sizes if you need it. I believe that the cost for cleaning is about 25-30 an injector. You can see them advertise in Import Racer and other import magazines.

Hey Thanks,
I found there web page.

http://www.rceng.com/

It's across town from me. This is the kind of service I was looking for. Ultra sonic cleaning.

I just called a local shop and they clean the injectors without removing them from the car. But no bench testings, no flow rate analysis. Just doesn't sound like a complete cleaning.

Now to figure out how to remove the injectors...

Anyone know why Mazda injectors for the first and second gens leak so much and cause so many problems? What is the root cause here fellas? Maybe cleaning will only temporarily fix the problem or not at all. Maybe we're better off buyin a whole different type of injector because the Rx injectors seem to have problems unique to em.

Holy ****,

Our cars have o2 sensors on the exhuast? That might be why mine runs so freaking rich in the morning...

SE's injectors are 680cc flow, and any good speed shop can clean, flow-balance, and leak-test injectors for less than $20 each. I recently sent a set of 5 of mine off to a local speedshop and then picked the best from the pack based on matching flow rate and re-pattern of spray.

The end result is better throttle response, better fuel economy, and more power. For the small investment of time and effort to remove the UIM and get to them, you can really gain a lot back for that time.

While you're in there, I recommend that anyone that removes the UIM to work on injectors also replace the Fuel INJECTION tubing that runs from feed and returns - these will decay over time and pressure, resulting in a fire risk. BE SURE TO USE FUEL INJECTION TUBING, not just Fuel Tubing - carb tubing will not stand up to 45-60psi fuel injection pressures.

Also, before you re-install the UIM, be sure to check the fuel injection rail and seals by shorting out the green plug by the AFM. This will turn on the fuel pump in spite of the engine not turning over, and allows you to check that all connections are tight and all seals are holding before you get the UIM back in place, only to find out that you have a leak.

Post back for a tutorial on how to remove UIM and injectors. Once you've done it, it's a 1 hour job, at most.

Well,

I just went and bought a new BOSCH Oxygen Sensor (they wanted me to use the cheap universal one and just splice the connector...nope, not doing that)...I also bought two new windshield wipers while I was there.

BOSCH's windshield wipers are so much better than Rain-X's, they feel more...built. The Rain-X ones were flimsy and didn't fit right.

Maybe this will fix my gas mileage issue?

Off the car cleaning is the only way you will know how they are performing and also get new parts such as filters, o-rings, pintle caps, etc.
I would recommend a place that cleans injectors exclusively, not just any speed shop. That way you will get people with the knowledge and proper parts.
Costs run from $12 to $30 each depending where you go.

If you want/need your injectors back quickly, instead of shipping them across the country, look around for a local diesel repair shop.Any shop that repairs diesel injection pumps, turbos and diesel injectors can also clean/balance gasoline injectors. Most rural/semi-rural areas will have a place where truckers and farmers take their diesel trucks and tractors in for repairs.Theres a little shop in my area that has about a 6 hour turnaround time and charges 12 bucks per injector. You get a printout of before/after leakage, spray pattern and flow rates, just like the speed shops or RC.
