fuel injection conversion?
 
:dunno:hi guys i have a ?. i have an 82 rx7 fresh motor just put in. i was thinking about turboing it soon and i was just wondering if it would be smarter/easier to convert to fuel injection or throw a holley or just throw a turbo on there with the nikki carb? any help appreciated, thanks!

Simple question, but not a simple answer. Factors to consider are budget, skill level, tools/equipment, hp/performance goals, yada yada yada. For best performance and tuneability, go FI. I'm sure the blowthru guys will want to argue the point but in the long run, FI has more advantages, other than cost.

I have been interested in converting a 12a over to fuel injection also. Everytime I wander off to the megasquirt forum, I leave more confused than when I went there!!

Anyone have a simple recipe for adding fuel injection to a 12a? Parts list, instructions, tuning etc.??

I think more people would be interested if they knew what it would cost, what parts to start buying and some info on what to expect as far as driveability, performance, and economy.

Please help!

If I was going to do it, I'd get the IDA style throttle body and manifold from Tweakit.net:

Then run a MegaSquirt or whatever you want to control it. Gonna be lots of learning involved either way, there's not really an easy way out that I'm aware of.

The smartest/easiest and most effective way is drop a 13BT in your car. A few tweaks to a stock 13BT (boost controller, larger secondaries etc) and you'll spend half as much on an engine that will run twice as fast.

I know I know...I might wanna do that on my street RX-7...but I would like to have FI on my naturally asperated autocross car as well...

13b has way weaker apex seals. and i like how the 12a is simpler and tough as nails, you cannot tell me its easier to drop a turbo 2 motor in there, i believe you would even have to make new mounts and change a abunch of little things, no thanks, i love my 12a. im thinking about turboing or supercharging the car soon and lets throw out the money factor unless its a huge amount, what would i need to get to make the conversion happen? thanks!

13b has weaker apex seals? Whaaaaat? That's wrong. I've owned many 13b powered cars and they ran beautifully. Just drop a 13b NA in it. Plumb a GSL-SE fuel pump to it, install GSL-SE front cover and oil pan. Install an FC gas tank baffle if you have a pre 81 model. Or install a GSL-SE tank if your post 81. Racing Beat sells a header to bolt the 13b to a 12a exhaust.

Hell yeah....even something simple like a single barrel....single injector throttle body fuel injection from an early 90's 4 banger GM product.... Simple and cheap.....

It's gotta work!!

screw that. not worth buying an entirely new motor just to get fuel injection i will stick to the main idea i suppose holley carb, and s/c or turbo, idk yet. and 80s u arent gonna be able to do any kind of power with a weak ass single injector setup. and ncross, that is a fact they are weaker that doesnt mean you may get lucky with yours. it is proven if you beat on a 12a and 13b for the same amount of time, the 12a will majoprity of the time outlast the apex seals then the 13b. the seals in a 13b are thinner and longer thus burn out easier. do your research on this site dude before you go telling people to just start throwing new motors in., rotary motors are not cheap and not that really easy to find. but thanks for your opinion. anyone else have any input please?

Ok dude. I will do my research because I know nothing about rotaries. I've only been building them from the ground up for the past 4 years. I've owned five 7's. The seals are a little thinner, but they will last just as long as any other seal. Both of my running s4's had close to 160,xxx miles and ran beautifully. There are many s4's on this forum with well over 200,000 miles on the original motor. If you have your system tuned right it will run forever. Why does everyone swap 13bs for anyway? Because they are better. 12as are great. I still have a 12a in my 79 and unless I find a great running 13b and all the swap parts for a couple hundred bucks (I have most of them anyway) I don't feel a need to swap.

You really don't need 3mm seals unless you plan on making alot of power anyways. I like the 12a's don't get me wrong. But there are FI 13b's a plenty and you will have a hard time trying to get a FI setup that will work with a 12a. And going through all that trouble to get one that works will only give you results that fall short of what a 13B puts out.

I know its only a matter of fuel injection, but you really don't have any reasonable options with a 12A.

Cool...I have no problem going to a 13b in my class....it will still remain in the same class with a 13b..

I see a lot of swaps from turbo cars to 1st gens....Has anyone done a 2nd gen NA swap into a 1st gen with the stock components, computer, etc.???

its been done with 2nd gen stock components i did iit a while back full emission swap and everything its being done right now by a couple other members right now. i will see if i can find the threads
