Free RX7, Gen1? or Gen2? Help please..

Hello, I was just given a 1984 or 85 RX7 GSL, freebies, yay. The previouse owner couldn't get it started after letting it sit for about 2 months, (I think it's from a short start, flooded), and the city was down his throat to get it moved or sold so he just gave it to me :bigthumb:

I'm currently only interested in finding out what year the car is, on the hood when opened it says '85 but I dont know what year the engine is or even if the engine has been replaced. Is there a way that I can tell what year the engine was made and how to detect if it has been rebuilt? modified? etc, etc, etc...? Where can I find the engine code? what if it's missing from that location?

I am in the process of getting the title so I don't plan on doing much work besides putting the thing back together, the dash is complete but in pieces. The engine looks complete but the air filter is in the passenger seat. Lots of new parts were never used since he couldn't get it started after replacing plugs, starter, and cables. The battery is dead so I need it charged to detect electrical problems. Which reminds me, What size is recomended for the battery? The one in it is smaller than a standard car battery. Pluss the battery cables are both black, one is thicker wire that is solid black, the other is a smaller wire that has a stripe on it.

Is there a diagram some place of the complete dashbord breakdown? preferably with screw sizes and types. I want to keep it factory stock as much as possable without substituting screws or clips.

One last question, Can these engines be push started even if they are flooded???

Sorry for the jumbled mess of questions, but any help is appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

you have to deflood it before starting it.

Sory about the hastily asked questions, I was a little excited and didn't read the first gen faq.

I found every thing I needed there. The factory service manual located at http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/cars/rx7/85_manual.html that was realy all I needed.

Again sorry for not reading the faq...

I also discovered the deflooding procedures so no need to reply details for that.

I understand your excitment, just remember to search for answers to your questions before you ask and you will find people willing to help you here.

For the battery cable just see which one goes to the starter and that's positive (+), the one that attaches to the car body is the ground (-). I prefer a very strong battery, but that is because it gets super cold up here and takes a lot of juice to turn the engine over.

by just looking at the engine I don't think you will be able to find out what specific year it is. I have never seen an engine code for them.

I dont reccomend push starting although people have done it. I think it puts unnecessary stress on the car.
I expained how to deflood a car here https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/short-vid-trying-start-my-7-any-ideas-708518/ or you can search how to do it, there are many different ways.
