engine problems

i just installed a streetported motor in my 1980 rx-7. it has the R.E. Dual DCD's, RB exhaust system, no rats nest. any way, the motor starts up fine but it be acting up. sometime it idles fine and some time it just drops below 1000 and dies. when i try to start it up again i have to crank it couple of time just for it to start back up. what do you guy think the problem is. the carbs is still good cause it was running in perfect condition on my old motor. oh yea, can some one tell me what the timing should be for a street ported motor. thanks

I believe that if you had a problem with the motor itself it would not come and go like that. A compression test couldn't hurt. Is it broken in yet?

I have seen some crazy things however. I would not assume that your carb is good so quickly however. Just unbolting and bolting back up your carb can shake stuff loose in the bowl, change settings, etc.

Start by checking basics, check fuel pressure, vacuum leaks, Dist stabbed properly, sticking choke.

Also remember that you put in a street ported motor, it may act diffferent from you NSP motor and may require adjustments.

How's the power? Pulls Hard?

It sounds fuel related. Check your filters, float levels etc.

the motor pulls hard, but not hard enough. i still have to get a good clutch and hard pressure plate. any info would help. i also gotta put on my light weight flywheel too. i'm about to pull the carb and manifold out and see whats going on. if the hole on the manifold is smaller then the intake ports on the motor would it make a difference? if so i might as well port the manifold.
