do I need the sub-zero start assist?

I'm removing the carbuerator right now and I'm thinking, can I just get rid of this thing? It doesnt even have any fluid in it and I dont ever plan on driving this car in sub-zero temperatures.

Alex-7 12-28-05 01:25 PM

Toss it.

inuissus_cendi 12-28-05 01:28 PM

thats just what i wanted to hear :bigthumb: i love tossing unnecessary crap.

capt murph 12-28-05 01:48 PM

Alex-7 12-28-05 01:52 PM

He won't miss it either.

the sub-zero start assist helps alot with apex seal life if you are in around 30 deg or less weather.......its kind of a defrost for you apex seals for cold starts.................i was told my a guy that worked on 12a's for mazda that not having it filled or not useing it at all was the number 1 caz for apex seal failer in cold climet places...............with that said i dont have it on mine toss it

thanks for the info, but i dont drive this car in winter anyways. If I do it wont be hard to put back on. But it is surprisingly hard to get the two bolts off. I had to remove practically everything else from that corner of the engine bay to get to the bottom one. Its gone now though, and that makes me feel good.

i live in South Tx.......the coldest it ever gets her is 30 degrees...for like less than a week......i think i am gonna toss mine too..

jays83gsl 12-28-05 10:59 PM

Toss it.

greeddennis 12-29-05 07:42 PM

Yeah id say toss it unless its working, i live in alberta and its been running fine without it. I plugged the thing back in today actually, and it just ran like shit wouldnt idle worth crap so i disconnected it and its good to go again. But latley its been fairly warm out ex: from around the worst being -10 to about +5...... too bad its getting colder out now so i think im gonna have to park it again and drive the truck.

The container says mix 90% aluminum glycol shit with 10% water. I havent filled it up myself ever before but theres still some left in it, maybe one day ill pump out the garbage stuff and put in new. As for the running time of this thing, is there some sort of thermal switch that clicks in and holds on until the engine is warm or does it just give it just pump it in at start up?

lovintha7 12-29-05 07:55 PM

Mazda actually recommended removing it in the FC and FD. Toss it. Most of them don't work anyways.

it gets in single digets, even below zero here in jersey, and I haven't had one in my car for years, works fine, its useless.

sholitz 02-14-06 03:49 PM

hey, I've been told that the part actually heats the car interior. is that even true? cause it dosent seem like it.....also, if it isnt below zero will the coolant be released same as if it was?

3rd and final 7 02-14-06 08:06 PM

no thats not true i dont see how it would be bc it squirts a lil coolant on the compression chamber to keep the seal lubed!

3rd and final 7 02-14-06 08:07 PM

How do you if the cold start assist works or not? sorry no meaning of highjacking intended

sholitz 02-15-06 12:17 AM

dont worry about jacking the thread, I want to know too

gmanuser 04-10-06 09:56 AM

consider it jacked! just like my car haha ha j/p

MosesX605 04-10-06 11:16 AM

I've driven two RX-7s in the coldest weather imaginable and the cold-start assist doesn't make a lick of difference. It's just another point of failure in a crowded engine bay full of them. Pull it and never look back.
