custom sub box install (lots of pictures) :)
 

i decided to put in a JL 8W306 behind the drivers seat. I thought id take some pictures along the way. and before everyone starts screaming at me, it sounds pretty good there and yes the box does have sides and a back although i didnt take any pictures of it. I also painted it black afterwords, maybe ill get a few more pictures up if you really wanna see.

that will look good. you can always use free air type speakers if you don't think the area will bw sealed well.

if your gonna weld try and find some old leather aprons or chaps for welding and spread them out around the weld areas.

i wasnt welding, just grinding out a notch so the box sort of clicks in. Otherwise i would lay down something...dont wanna start a fire! I was planning on putting the door back on but after i put it in i dont think there is a good way to do it. There is not much space back there at all (even for an 8''). But i can take the whole box out and put the cabinet back in super easy if i go to the track or something. only takes like 14.5 sec. :)

I never was a fan of what I saw of bin sub enclosures but that is by far the best I've seen yet...I think you should remove both bins and put 3 subs across covering the particle board with carpet or something else...I think one looks weird...anyone else?

Hopefully that'll sound good, In my experience Free air enclosers don't sound very good, and damage to the sub and coil is much easier, because there is nothing to limit the coil's travel, let us know how it sounds. Best of luck

Just so you know it's going to rattle like a mother! I had a friend hide a bazoka 8 behind the storage boxes and the whole thing rattled like hell! Recheck all the bolts and nuts that hold the storage boxes in...

sorry if i didnt specify...its not free air. ill post some new pictures when i go home. It actually doesnt rattle at all, its been installed for a few months. it sounds pretty good. anyways thanks for the feedback. Ill try to post some pictures tonight...otherwise tommorow.

but i would of defintly made it a sealed box and as close to the volume specs of the sub i could and i do agree with "Matty's first 1st Gen" it may shortin its life
but looks good and it has derintly inspired me :)

IT IS A SEALED BOX!!!! the pictures are just of the "faceplate". I followed the JLaudio recommended sealed enclosure dimensions as closely as i could. there was no way to do a port or vent. The box ended up being a little smaller than the recommended even with some wierd angles i ended up doing. Ill post pictures tommorow that will clear everything up.

they sound like shit in that location. try mounting a few subs in a sealed box in the rear hatch area, with the subs facing upwards.....the closer the subs are to the very rear of the car where the window is very close to the subs makes the most bass

i am working on 2 15" subs in boxes that take up the entire hatch area, with the subs as close to the rear of the car as possible. there is 35" x 35" x 10" of space to make a box, then cover the box with plywood covered in vinyl to cover the entire hatch area (over the rear shock towers and stuff) and it looks amazing. so that's approx. 6 cubic feet of space, enough to do 4 12" subs (which i originally did), or 6 10" subs, or 2 or 3 15" which i can't wait to get finshed

my last install with 4 12" pioneer impp (not very good subs, only 150 watts rms), and 2 phoenix gold ms-275 amps powering them (150 watts to each sub bridged), i was hitting 142.6 db which aint too bad. im hoping for 150 db with my new setup

w3's are awesome they can work in a rfriggin tiny box, so if your'se is just alittle smaller then it should be great! I love JL's! i want another car bad so I can put a booming system in! My car is all stripped and is in the slow process of going full race...

I love your set up. I'd really like to see the rest of the enclosure. I think I might do the same thing. I really don't have room for a sub box in my hatch because the batter has been relocated to the back in a battery box, so I've been looking for a way to do a storage bin enclosure. This setup is a nice clean setup. Post up the after shots and enclosure please. Specs if you have them

I like it! Nick 1, you have some serious miss information! Its a pretty good location. You only hit 142db's with all those subs. I hit 141db with 2 12's in my storage bins. And currently hitting 145 with just 1 15" in the back.

wow, you managed to get some pretty big boxes in there. How much did that setup end up weighing? either way it looks good. i can tell you put a lot of work into that with all those angles. the 15" looks real good too. keep up the good work.

Nice looking! I think I am going to glass in an 8 there. AFTER I get the other speakers all working.

I found that having the subs pointing directly at the driver from the storage bin doesn't sound as good as possiable, because of the low frequency, and long wavelength its always better to have the sound travel a longer distance before hitting your ears. having the distance between the sub and you at .5 a meter doesn't let the waves to fully develop 2 meters is ideal. Pointing the sub towards the hatch gives you that length, and also the resonance from the hatches shape. Check out my new box, all figerglassed, completely to the subs specs. sure kinda looks like a rocket, but it sounds great.
You're setup looks really tight and stock though, its a good tradeoff

i can understand the rigidity of glass would allow the low frequency waves to bounce off well. In fact sometimes i take the box out, lay it in the back facing the glass and i can definatley hear the difference. some of the bass is lost when it gets absorbed in the back of the seat. i tried to compensate for this by adding a thin layer of fiberglass over the entire inside of the box to increase the box rigidity.

im gonna go with audiobarhn sounds and to a 1000rms 12" itl be a pity if i cant do it like yours :)

It isn't the best place for a sub for best sound. For someone who listens to Hair bands and NIN though, it is just fine. As long as you are just looking for beter sound then stock or the base upgrade of speakers, putting the sub in the box behind the driver is perfect I think. You don't have something that is out in the back taking up room, I never use that bin because I don't want to move my seat around, and you can hide it very easily.
