Cupholders? We have cupholders!!!

Am I stupid or those cup holders in the glove box door? There are little circles cut out in the plastic as if you were to "set your drink there". If that's really true... Mazda has a sense of humor....

787B 04-03-02 09:12 PM

i noticed those in my old FB.....and i also have them in my FC.

i know it is funny. i actually used it once when i was eating but i was parked. it really is the stupidest thing though if you are driving because one turn and she is gone.

riffraff 04-03-02 09:15 PM

those are definatly a joke.. i was just going to mount a cut holder in my center consol type thing.
that way it is out of the way when i donot need it

SilverRocket 04-03-02 09:20 PM

You can get cupholders that fit into your cigarette lighter hole

riffraff 04-03-02 09:22 PM

really.. how sturdy are they..
that would not help much for us SA people though, since the shifter is so close to it

Not very sturdy, I got one for my dad for christmas and his coffee spilled all over the floor the first (and last) time he used it.

jeremy 04-03-02 09:44 PM

alot of cars have that. my gf maxima does, my camry did...........

riffraff 04-03-02 09:52 PM

that is kinda what i figured.

79+80_rx-7 04-03-02 10:09 PM

Almost every car, that I have seen the glove box, I have noticed those there, I wonder if it was designed for somthing else???? Dunno

mperformance 04-03-02 10:25 PM

reminecent of drive in movie theaters...

SilverRocket 04-03-02 10:42 PM

Always worked fine for me

V8kilr 04-04-02 05:28 AM

i always use mine when im eating "parked" because where else can you possibly fit a cup or two?

the center counsel is taken for nugget dip.

rx-7girl 04-04-02 05:48 AM

nuggets are nasty......and my friend had one in her old mazda 626 and she only seemed to use it whenever she was picking me up for really important.....

bk chicken tenders with sweet & sour sauce :D

OtakuRX 04-04-02 07:10 AM

I was thinking of making my own cup-holder out'a the ash tray. I was just going to use some sheet metal to make it a bit more sturdy and to keep it from snaping under a heavy load.

RotorMotorDriver 04-04-02 07:16 AM

Yumm...Im hungry now...And no engine in my car, cant go to BK :(. I was at McDonalds the other day and ate their "chicken nuggets", they are sooooo gross, I remember why I stopped eating there. BK is the only real place I eat anymore, but I dont eat their burgers, only chicken and fish stuff. I just dont like grilled, flame cooked, or barbecued (except ribs), I must not be an American :D. I used to like McDonalds, and then one time I watched the people in the back making the food...I used to eat Taco Bell, but then they changed their meat and stuff...I never really liked Jack In The Box...Taco Time is too expensive...Whats a teenager to do for lunch anymore!?!?! Now all my friends and I just have a good excuse to drive REALLY fast, we have 1/2 an hour to get from Woodinville to Lake City to Kidd Valley, or maybe even Dicks if were feeling really courageous (or if our radar dectectors are working well) that day :).

Turbo_Crazy 04-04-02 11:20 AM

Hey RotormotorDriver, you shure you aren't Canadian? It's always too cold to have barbeques up here!:beerchug:

p.s. dont mind the dirty interior :D

MIKE-P-28 04-04-02 12:24 PM

Anyone ever notice that the pasenger seat edge next to the console works pretty good for a 20 oz bottle? Thats what I used, and it works pretty good in the 2nd gen too :) Now my 85 had one of those old cell phones mounted and it was perfect if you moved the seat up a little. It would hold anything, a litre bottle, a beer bottle :) (you guys know me :) ) , 20 oz, a can, a big ass coke from Rally's anything. Makes it almost worth getting an old cell phone :) LOL Well I dont have service but it worked for 911 serveral times :)

RotorMotorDriver 04-04-02 12:29 PM

Hey FD Racer...My interior looks just like that (well, mines brown) :). I have an 83 GSL with the snazy (also non-functional) audio system and the alarm LED in the middle too :). Just thought Id share :).

~T.J.

rx7gslse 04-04-02 12:57 PM

On my GSL-SE cups fit just great behind the ebrake handle between the seat and console... Works great for supersized McD's cups..

Just don't forget it's there and yank the ebrake when you park when I did... Get's kinda messy..

MyRxBad 04-04-02 02:07 PM

FDRacer: That's one sturdy cup holder. 6 screws and all :D (I don't think my fuel pump has that many bolts to it. Good compact design for aftermarket though! :)

Mike: I used that spot beside the passenger seat and the console all the time.

rx7gslse: The part behind the e-brake is where my cell goes.

The rotary brotherin are very versitile.... :)

Dusukun 04-04-02 02:42 PM

LOL...I feel you all on the lack of cupholders!! I LMAO when I saw those dinky little glove box things, too.

I typically shove whatever I'm drinking in between my seat and the door at kind of an angle. That works pretty well...Especially when whatever it is has a cap or lid on it...The only problem is if it's like a cardboard fast food cup...The cup bows from the pressure popping the lid off a bit...I usually don't know it, but figure it out REAL quick whenever I take a turn. Good thing I shampoo my carpets...

riffraff 04-04-02 02:51 PM

fdracer: the only problem that i see with those cupholders is that they donot hold anything larger than a soda can (now i say soda because you all know that you are not supposed to be driving with beer.. plus beer in cans sucks ass). do you have problems fiting drinks in there?

BadAssRX-7 04-04-02 04:50 PM

on my 81 and my 83 you can remove the center switch/ change holder and put in a miata cup holder all of 2 min. and its done :)

riffraff 04-04-02 04:55 PM

that is awsome for you second series guys.. but us poor old SA's and third series have a different center consol setup. so i donot know if it would work for us..

can you send up a couple pics??

You know me... I NEVER drink and drive. I wont even drive after drinking 1 or 2.. I know that it works good for beer and such cuz I have been drunk in my car a shitload of times, but make someone else drive :)

riffraff 04-04-02 06:04 PM

donot worry mike. i was not refering to anyone in particular.

besides, cup holders make a great place to keep the boos while you are working on your car.. if you put your drink to close to your tools, you are liable to nock it over while going for a 3/8 drive. and that would be alcohol abuse, which we all know is bad....

White84SE 04-04-02 10:56 PM

Something I used to do in my old '82 GSL... 'course, it only works if you're on a freeway, or a road with almost no turns... works really well for large and supersize drinks from McDonalds.. if you set the drink just right and balance it, it'll rest on the bottom of the steering wheel and lean against the horn button.. voila, instant cupholder and very accessible, too... LOL Ahhh.. I remember eating, smoking and driving a stick all at the same time while in traffic... damn, I hate auto trannies... LOL

Pele 04-04-02 11:26 PM

I wedged a 20 oz soda bottle in my Honda's steering wheel and took a turn expecting it to fall out. (Cap was on)... Amazingly, it didn't fall out.

You know it actually holds quite a bit, as the arms extend outwards to accommodate larger drinks. Today I used it for an extra-large (44oz?) drink cup from In N' Out. It was a bit tight for the extra large, but I use it all the time for large drink cups, which are 32oz i think.

p.s. MyRxBad,
yeah I was thinking of also adding some glue and a support bracket to go with the six screws, what do you think? :D Naw man,...there was already six counter-sunk holes on the mount, definitly over kill.

gonzz 04-05-02 03:57 AM

where can i put my 40 ounce? hehehe

Between your legs with a bottle that big your screwed unless you get a permanment mounted cellphone on a pedistal like I :) Everything fits between the phone, console and seat :)

BadAssRX-7 04-08-02 01:31 AM

i want to say its the early 1 with the same lights as the fb. go to the dealer and get it its like 12-15$ and is 3 peices the holder, a LARGE cup adapter(great for holding change) and a little spill pan

riffraff 04-08-02 01:34 AM

cool cool... next time i get a chance to head down to the local mazda dealership i will pick one up. i hope they would be reliable enough to get the right part from them, because well all know how much mazda dealerships suck for everything else

ben79 04-08-02 02:14 AM

I might be mistaken, but that looks pretty much the same as the sa's ashtray. i think they might work :) However, i'll give someone else the pleasure of finding out ;) I'm going to be putting my power window and mirror switches in that location, nicely hidden my the ashtray cover, i think.

BTW, has anyone taken apart the sa ashtrays and wondered why there was that small rectangular translucent green peice, with a crosshatch pattern on top? There's no light underneath it in my car, at least. (i'll put an LED in there for kicks tho...eventually have a blinking light to show an armed security system, like the others guys have :) )....

85rx7blue 04-08-02 06:48 PM

JUST LIKE THE LIGHT ON THE CLOCK.

85rx7blue 04-08-02 06:55 PM

NO WAY

riffraff 04-08-02 08:15 PM

ben97: the light that you are talking about in the sa ashtrays, it lights up in my car.. well atleast it did when it was in my 80..

i think that the size of the ash trays are the same in series one and two.. when ever i get a chance, i am going to swing over to mazda and pick up one of those miata cupholders, like badass was talking about... i will let you know how it works

BadAssRX-7 08-13-02 12:05 AM

ok UPDATE...... I went to the local dealer ad happen to see the miata cup holder so i got the part # off it just 4 u guys.

Thats exactly what I do...The lid popping off doesnt bother me cause the only paper cup I put there is for a Slurpee anyway, and its "solid" enough that it says in the cup :). Oh, and BadAss, what was the price on it?

BadAssRX-7 08-13-02 09:54 AM

Manntis 08-13-02 12:41 PM

Nope, no fittee into 84-85 or I'd have just bought one of those instead :)
