Question Coolant temp sensors?

Can anyone tell me what the sensor on the back of the water pump does? I believe the small one pin one on the side of the block goes to the gauge... not sure on this one on the water pump... thinking about using this location to go to my haltech and just not use stock sensor... is is needed?

if the water pump is from a 12A car then the sensor on the back of the water pump is for releasing the choke when the car is warmed up. Why would you remove the one in the side of the block? this one operates the gauge in your dash and could be left alone....just pull out the water pump sensor and swap it to a GM coolant temp sensor for the haltech.... not positive on the thread size if it is the same as the second gen cars you can get a coolant temp sensor for a 2000 Camaro and it will fit the stock spot (least on a second gen car) I can check the threads for you later tonight....
