The continuing of black interior conversion

Continuing my interior conversion project. Started out with carpet in this thread. Now I finally got a chance to swing by the upholstery supply store and pick up all new foam, vinyl, and suede for the rest of the interior. I got 1/8" Polyfoam, 1/8" closed cell foam, black vinyl, and black suede.

Here is the driver side door panel with the old vinyl removed, with the foam still on.

Most of the old foam came off with a really fine wire brush and a drill. Keep the speed low, if you have one of those adjustable ones, that stop the chuck when too much pressure is applied, it helps to have it set to SOFT, so do accidentally put too much pressure on it and mess up the panel. I did one panel with the wire brush/drill and the other by hand with a 2" scrapper and LOTS of time. Both provided similar results. The scraper needs to be used on the panel that was stripped with the brush to get the remaining adhesive.

(Panel shown was done with the wire brush/drill before I scraped the rest off)

Couple more pictures showing the headliner, and the piece behind the door. Everything is stripped but the headliner now. I just need to remove the foam (ugly brown foam shown below) and it will be ready for the new foam to be glued on. More pictures coming soon. I wish I wasn't here sitting behind my desk posting this, but rather at home working on this!

So, to get that tar out (under carpet), you went with Dry Ice and Hammer/Chisel? Man, that sucks! There's got to be something better. That's about where I'm at, plus I still have to find those elusive remaining screws to get the dash out.

Dry Ice rocks. Get about 20lbs of it, smash it up into little chunks and spread across the floor. Then it pretty much lifts out after about 20 minutes. Then the any remaining tar was taken up with an angle grinder and a coarse wire brush. There are 8 bolts that hold the dash, undo all the wires, remove the ducting from the blower motor. It comes out pretty easy (on 84-85 that is). PM me if you got dash questions. I yanked mine 2 times.

looking good ... how many yards of material did you pick up for everything? I'm also at that stage with my tan interior. Also how much was it by yard and what brand did you go for?

I got all of it at A1 Foam and Fabrics locally. You can order from them online too I believe.

Not sure what brand, but it is what they recommended for auto upholstery. It all feels like good quality stuff. I was surprised it was this cheap, but they are a huge warehouse of upholstery supplies.

Poly foam, which is the porous looking foam for like $2.xx a yard x 5 yards by 54"

Closed cell foam (the firmer WHITE foam) for about $5.xx a yard x 5 yards by 60"

Vinyl on sale for about $7.xx a yard @ 3 yards by 54", the style is called OXEN, seen here.

Suede was about $16.95 a yard x 3 yards by 54".

Then I got a few cans of 3M 90 Adhesive Spray.

The new black vinyl is replacing the old gray vinyl. And the suede is replacing all the old cloth, on the door panels, headliner, and those little pieces up where the seat belt shoulder strap mounts.

The vinyl is going to use the closed cell foam and the suede will use the poly foam for a more plush/softer feel.

Haha, not a pro here. The only exerience I've had remotely close to this has been a few sub boxes, and a few custom panels/amp racks that I've made out of MDF for one of my old cars I used to have.

I just took my time and did my best to not **** up. I only re-did one piece, and it was the 1st pice I did, the little piece where the shoulder mount is for the seatbelt.

Thanks for the compliments thouh

My neighbor Gabriel was saing that he thinks I'm Latino with my upholstering skills. There was something else that made him think that too, but he said the upholstery was the icing on the cake.

I ran out of glue so I haven't been doing much else on it. But I got more now, headliner and door panels this weekend.

Yeah, I've done a little more since the last time. Yeah, a little. I've been laggin' BIG time. The last few weeks I've been moving/settling in and that whole mess. Well all thats left for me to do is the door panels, the sun roof piece, and figure out some way to do that little spring loaded piece at the front of the sun roof.

Seats will eventually be replaced with something in black.

I couldn't find the missing piece before I took the pictures. I found it later that night, and its on the car now. And I fixed that gap arund the wheel well cover thingy.

I need to retouch some of the plastics, they scratched during storage. I guess I should have gotten this done in a more timely manner, but oh well.
