Checkball and weights
Hey guys taking the carb apart and cleaning it.
when i remove the accel pump circuit, the ball and weight came out of the middle hole...but only the ball came out of the other one..is it stuck in there? there shoudl be a weight in there as well right? |
i got it out guys.....a little carb cleaner down there got her out. Ill check back tomorrow when im done the rebuild
|
Son of a gun... I still have one stuck for almost 3-4 months now.
I'm going to try 1 more time tommorow and then it's off to plan B. |
Sterling can tell you how to get those out of there. They can be pretty stubborn sometimes. :)

Soak it in penetrating oil and brake cleaner, then wiggle it with a magnetized icepick or other sharp, hardened probe. Worked for me when nothing else would.
|
well, all done the rebuild and i pu the carb back on and turned the key to ON. No leaks outside the carb, but the jets are dripping gas. Any ideas where i should look.
|
Start tapping the top with a plastic screwdriver handle or something; it's not uncommon for new needles to hang up in the bores and not seat well. & check your sight-glass levels.
|
ok ill check the glass again. Should i try and start the car like this, or should i try and fix the problem first?

I said on my forum to you that the flooding could be vent related. But there's something else; The richer solenoid circuit. Have a look on my site under troubleshooting. It shows how to block it off, which is not what I'm suggesting you need to do, but the photos demonstrate where the fuel might be coming from if it's hemorrhaging and the float bowls are at the half way mark. If the solenoid is stuck open (the assembly has been put back together in the incorrect order), then that circuit could be open and allowing fuel from the firewall fuel bowl to enter the throttle body. |
Stirling, you've got my interest here: Is the richer circuit able to allow fuel delivery absent vacuum?
If so, you may have provided me with a useful clue to a post-shutdown flooding issue that has been plaguing me for months. My richer solenoid and its needle is 30 years old ... |

well whoever built the carb before me had no idea what he was doing. When i took the carb apart the weight was in first and then the ball for the accel pump. Also, when i removed the floats there was no spring and that liitle brass pin in the seat.
Sterling, this is how the carb was beofre i rebuilt it. There is no richer solenoid in place......what can i do now?? |
also, my bowls were FULL, but i put the needles and seats back the way they were (above post), so that explains it i think
One more thing, i noticed that my kit came with 2 gaskets that didnt seem to fit anywhere. Could one be for the bottom of the carb??? There is this plastic thing with a thick rubber pad bthat the carb sits on....should i use the bottom gasket form the kit?? |
You don't need those two gaskets (most kist come with a few extras because applications vary) - - the plastic (phenolic) carb spacer and its two PERMANENT gaskets do the trick. Don't wreck it by trying to peel those two rubberized gaskets off.
Some kits also come with two bowl gaskets that have only a small difference between them. Important that you use the right one, and use it rightside up! |

Paligap, your carb doesn't have the richer circuit drilled out, so scratch that whole theory. :( Driver, if the richer solenoid malfunctions or is not hooked up properly, somehow keeping the circuit open all of the time, it is very possible that fuel in the firewall side bowl can rise and overwhelm the circuit. The trouble is really a matter of simple siphoning, but it is probably induced by vacuum pressure changes inside the carb. For example, if the float bowl vent solenoid works, closing off the ventilation to the carb, but that richer circuit is in the open position, well, out goes the fuel. Read about it here: http://www.sterlingmetalworks.com/troubleshooting.htm |

you guys have been very helpfull:D
I have a few more question so i thought i would ask all 3 and post some pics 1] Is the oder correct with the air vent solenoid? 2] is the brass thing facing the right way? Should the 2 large holes be horizontal? 3]Should i reuse the screens? They were in seated in where the brass seat sits... 4]Should i reuse the outter bowl thing? If so, teeth facing the carb or teeth facing me? |

He tracked it down to the return line restrictor being reversed. I have also heard of a small orifice in the charcoal canister or a line that runs to it having the same effect. Hope this helps...

Thanks again sterling.....i was just measuring the floats according the the Factory rebuild manual on foxed.....and upside down the float was 21mm from the gasket....i just ajusted it to 16mm, and rightside up it measures 51mm right on.
Ill post when im all done....:icon_tup: |
Uh oh, he touched his floats!!! :)
|
I'ma coverin' up mah head...
|
:facepalm2:*sigh*:icon_no2:

i know , iknow, but this was my last option. I read the troubleshooting for full bowls on Sterling's site...anbd everything checked out. The FBVS was working, the pressure is good (stock pump clicking), and i had not changed anything post rebuild and my bowls were always at 1/2.
|
my bowls are still full:S
the left one is full, but not dripping from the jets. the right one is full and only dripping on primary side |
You likely need to check your floats and make sure they actually, you know, float. In gasoline.
