Break booster / master cylinder questions

how’s it GOIN !!

anyway; I decided to be the person I am and I went ahead and bought my rx7. Did I know it would have its issues? Of course. Did I actually account for the fact that finding parts for a 40 y/o rotary car would be tricky? Heck no

I need a master break cylinder and a break booster for it to pass safety, I’m finding break cylinders fine but I can’t for the life of me find a break booster, well.. not one that looks like it’ll actually fit in the car…

it also needs wiring to be done since the high beams don’t work, the other lights work great, but as soon as I try to use high beams all the lights shut off; if anyone has a wiring diagram for the rx7, I’d greatly appreciate it lol oorrr any intel on how to fix that issue!

I’ll have a certified mechanic guiding me on my journey to fix this gold turd as I’m an apprentice, but he’s never worked on something so old, so I guess it’s a learning experience for the both of us 😅

For the booster, I think RockAuto has a rebuild service. You'll never find a new one. Might be able to dig and find a resonable replacement for WilWood but I don't thing anyone has yet.

T3 sells a mini booster for the SA . Bolts right on .

PLEASE KNOW !!! This requires you to apply more force to stop than OEM ( around 60% more force ) .

Which part of Ontario are you from?

I might be able to help you out with the brake booster.

A second gen booster will fit but you have to make the holes bigger and it puts the booster way close to the clutch master. I've seen it done in person.

I bought one of these from Amazon last April, when I thought mine went bad, but it was just the master cylinder that was bad. Mine is a 1983 RX7.

The T3 mIni booster is NOT a direct swap for the stock booster. You need a different master cylinder to use it, like a later miata. It twists the master cylinder 90 degrees, so you need to run/modify all new hard lines into the MC. I bought the T3 kit and will happily sell it to whoever wants it.

Just get your original brake booster rebuilt.

Did yours come with the adapter plate ? The adapter plate lets you use the stock booster . They were NLA for the SA and FB booster plate for almost two years and sold the generic flo's mini booster which does not mount to your stock master cylinder.

Has the car been sitting a long time? You will want to be careful with the fuel system if so... Dropping the tank to have it dipped/cleaned and re-coated, and then replacing the soft fuel lines and pump+filter will be a very good investment.

A basic tune-up.. spark plugs, wires, cap/rotor, replace all fluids, etc will go a long way too.

Other than a few hard to find parts, ie brake booster, there still is a large amount of parts available. The link to the factory service manuals posted by KansasCityRepu also has the full factory wiring diagram, parts catalog etc. You will find that your local Mazda dealer can get many parts still. If you google a part number and can see it available online from the States, 95% sure your local dealer can get within a few days. Dealer is great for things like hoses, thermostat, oil filters, etc.

The FAQ is handy too:

Great to see another FB being saved in Ontario. Unless I go to a specifically Rotary car meet, I am lucky to see one or two a year. I daily drive my Sunrise Red '82 around Toronto in the summer.. My dad has a Maya Gold '82 which I think is the same colour as yours. Awesome colour.
