there is more to it. be sure to install a stinger breaker 6" after the battery. dont be cheap as this is for your own protection

A sealed battery if you don't already have one. Don't buy a new one, you can get much cheaper cosmetically-flawed units from battery retailers like Interstate, etc.

I'm running a Miata battery in my 7. It is better to move it back but do to not wanting the hassle/cost of relocation I just put it in the stock spot. Starts my car just fine, and is a good 20lbs lighter than the stock battery.

Just did this twice, LOL. You need ....
1. Battery (highly recommend using sealed/gel type)
2. Terminals
3. 10ft ground cable 0/2/4 gauge
4. 10ft power cable 0/2/4 gauge
5. 16ft alt wire 8 gauge is good
6. battery tray and fasteners
7. roll of foil sided waterproofing tape ( it's a rubberized conpound with foil ext.) you can get it at hardware store or use sound deadening mat of same type.
8. 3/4" grommet
9. 1/2 "grommet
10. handfull of "eye" type crimp connectors (copper is best)
11. circuit breaker

remove bin panels and move wiring away from ares that you wish to mount battery. Locate area under car as well and be sure there are no fuel lines/wires there as you'll be drilling hles to mount the tray. Place the tray in location, shim where needed to level tray. drill 2 to four holes through tray and mount with machine screws and aircraft nuts, good idea to silicone under tray to pevent vibration/noise later. Choose route for cables. I chose the drivers side of the tranny tunnel. Put bin panel on with couple screws just to fit. Drill hole for pos. cable and alt. wire. Drill second smaller hole for ground wire. I chose to run it on the drivers side door area. drill hole for exit of positives near starter in tranny tunnel. place grommets in all holes. run waterproofing tape along floor where + wires will run grommet to grommet. Press + and alt wires through tunnel hole making sure you have enough to reach starter and alt respectively. Secure bin panels, and push other ends through grommet. Run second tape layer over the wires, to secure them and preventing chaffing. Choose good grounding spot close to battery, or drill one. Some use the seat bolt. run ground wire to this spot and another from this spot to starter bolt. ( also a good idea to run one from starter bolt to original "shock tower" location. More grounding is never a bad thing. Secure battery to tray, and install circuit breaker near battery. Cut wires to length and crimp connectors on. connect starter + and alt + as well as grounds. Now simply connect wires to terminals and terminals to battery. (I also recommend using rubber or some other liner in tray to "quiet and reduce rub") Fire her up and go for a drive!

If you don't use a gel/sealed type battery, You'll need to accomdate for gas leakage etc. and above install is NOT recommended.

there are probly a thousand reasons why this won't work. but since the topic is here i thought i'd ask.

on a dedicated track fb, has anyone moved the battery to the spare tire compartment. seems like it'd be good for weight and all. and it would obviously be one of those extremely small racing batterys. just an idea. i havent looked into this beyond that point at all.

thoughts?

Nick

Someone on the forum here has relocated their battery to the hatch area. Just search battery relocation and it should be the one with pics at the end of the title. I haven't looked at it for a while.
