argh....stutter at low rpm

hey guys,

this moring i get up to go out..and car barely moves..coughing and stuttering etc..backfiring like crazy etc., idle is a little lower than usual...

so...sigh..since i missed my appt. anyway, i open the hood and find my battery has come free of its moorings and is resting on the distributor....and there seems to be battery water / acid on the plug wires etc..

so i tighten up all the plug wires, (one coil was loose) shut hood, go for a drive....

now, no problems after 2500 rpm, car accelerates smoothly and nicely in any gear..lower thatn 2500, missing and backkfiring like crazy...

i checkd for loose plugs etc. hoses...none i can see....

any ideas?

Paul

check the hoses raound there... mebbe the acid ate through one of them? just a guess... is there a hissing noise like air beign sucked through a straw or anything?

Vohaul 06-22-02 02:56 PM

no..no hissing noise......sigh....

i was just out there and i blocked the shutter valve hose

didnt make much difference....

you know, do you think maybe it knocked the distributor loose..moved the timig maybe?

hmm..ill go chck that in a bit

abeomid 06-22-02 03:59 PM

maybe you've got some acid inside the distributer or something

did you look at the rotor in the dizzy. when I first got my rex the battery wasnt tied down and it slid into the dizzy and the half of the rotor was destroyed.

good call..ill go have a look.....

its also idling at semmingingly about 400-500 rpm....
whereas yesterday it was doing a rock solid 750

well, the rotor seems intact, but old, and the cap...the points inside seem worn out heavily.....which is probably a god place to start..but i just cant figure out why it started so suddenly....

also, spark plug wires have battery acid on them.....is it a good idea to replace em?

The battery acid can eat through those plastic convers, so it would be a good idea to change the plug wires. They are fairly cheap from mazda.

k..will do....it needs a tune up anyway..so new cap , rotor, plug wires, plugs..oh.and that pesky manifold gasket......i love rx-7's:)
