Another backfire thread. ported 13B

I couldn't find a good answer by using search...so here it goes.

Ported 6port 13B. Running VERY rich. No cat. Any time I let off and press the throttle again KA-BOOM!!! Still is FI.

And another question.

Is backfiring bad for a rotary motor?

Elysian 08-19-04 08:27 PM

heh my 88 TII was like that, but it had a 3" straight pipe, and 720 cc/min secondaries... my 87 backfired sometimes too, especially when i took the mufflers off.... my REPU when it ran loved to shoot flames... my 84 never really shot flames, but it only ran for 15 minutes

blackbirdzach 08-19-04 08:35 PM

So constant massive backfires won't hurt the motor?

Brent_F 08-19-04 10:12 PM

Mine does the same thing. The flame lights up all three mirrors at night.

Only experience I have is from a friend of mine, his eats mufflers (we believe because of back fireing) I have the RB system and it has yet to suffer any noticable ill effects.

I would find it hard to believe this could hurt the motor being that it is designed to handle internal combustions of far greater force than a back-fire delivers it. Only problem I could see is carbon from the exhaust getting blown back into the motor but that stuff is in there anyway so....

From what I gather, it does not harm the rotary, but makes Ricers go "oooh, ahhh"
:)

OK guys I don't understand how it could possibly be pulled into the motor.

1 it's a mixtue being blown out of the exhaust

2 it's not really a "backfire" its shooting flames

is this an original SE or a 13B transplant? what do you have controlling the fuel injection?

if you can't find a safe way to lean things out where you need it, then i'd say play around with different plugs (both type and heat range) and also maybe play with the timing a bit as well.

yes, you haven't seen muffler carnage until you've seen a rotary backfire and physically tear a cheap muffler in two ...

RB/Prima Flow, in my experiences, can take anything you throw at them ...

YapaKanichi 08-19-04 11:32 PM

well with tips in an ebay muffler it blows em in two lol

Technically, it's not a "backfire" (intake combustion); it's "afterburn" (exhaust combustion). No, it's not harmful to the engine, but it can add a lot of stress to the exhaust...particularly the muffler. Here is a picture of my muffler after some very serious afterburn:

Good job with that muffler. I've yet to see one that damaged

And that trailer is nice too.

Oh man!!! That's awesome! :hail: :hail:

Thanks for the input guys. I'm getting more and more hooked on RX7's everyday. I've had all sorts of toy cars, but nothing as fun as this. :)

You should have seen/heard it ten miles later...the whole back end of the muffler fell off. The remaining shell of the muffler acted like a big resonator on an already insanely loud (I had to wear ear plugs before the muffler fell apart) peripheral port 13B motor. While looking for a muffler shop in an unfamiliar city, I drove by a car accident investigation scene in Redding, California and all the police officers stopped what they were doing (measuring skid marks, etc), stood up, and watched me pass by slowly with fingers in their ears. Something tells me, if they weren't tied up with the accident, I would have been chased out of that town like the Blues Brothers on their way to pay back taxes for the penguins. :)
