84 gsl-se - fuel pump loud

hello all,

well, first time posting on this first gen forum, I have a several rx-7s, mainly 2nd gens, but also an immaculate 84 gsl-se, all original and definately one of the best in the country. Showroom new in every way.

I have owned this car about 10 years, and although its a garage queen, I had to replace the fuel pump about 5 months ago.
I replaced it with the correct one, size, etc. at the local auto store.

When I went to start it, the fuel pump didnt come on. I used the jumper wires on it, and then it came on. Maybe a few months of sitting made it lock up or something, Ive never heard of that, and the thing is new.. anyway, went for a warmup drive and the fuel pump was LOUD. You could easily hear it inside the car, with the engine running. I looked under the car, didnt see it rattling or anything, the bracket, which is a very good design, is tight. The bracket even has a rubber insulation on it, all is secure and tight.

anyone out there ever run into an overly loud{new} fuel pump ?

any info is helpful, as I havent run into it either,ha

thanks all

does it sound like a dull ticking?

mack123 12-25-06 06:52 PM

jeezus, hey is this like jesus helping me on christmas ? hah thanks for your question..

no, the sound isnt like a dull ticking, it sounds like the fuel pump normally sounds,
a slight hum, like bees, only the prob i have is its amplified so you can hear it about 15 feet away.

ah. my fuel pump makes horrible ticking noises. I was told it would go away with a OEM pump... I know I dont have the best advice, but something is better than nothing.

Merry Christmas

mack: Do you know the brand of pump? The SE pump normally hums, but I can't hear mine with the engine running. I just put on a Bosch brand pump. Works well. About $75 from partsamerica.com (Schucks/Checker/Kragen). There are other brands that work, but I am pretty sure Bosch is OEM.

The situation with needing the jumper wire to run the fuel pump without the engine running is normal. The pump normally just runs when the engine is cranking or running.

The ticking noise that Jeezus is talking about is normal for many aftermarket carb fuel pumps. The SE is EFI, so the pumps are different.

Sounds like the pump is cavitating, meaning it's pushing air with fuel. Because you car does not get driven much it could be caused by a restriction in the fuel supply. Either the tank is corroded with debri and has deminished the size of the feed supply or you may have a kinked line under the car. Also make sure the connections have not been severley corroded. And if the fuel filter has not been changed in the last 30k it is due.

thanks for your replies. I think the brand name was "wells" . I save all my receipts, wife is looking thru them, and it isnt turning up.

I remember the kid at the counter said the pump was right, but now I am doublechecking, I can get the numbers when I crawl under car.
It might be the wrong one, as addict said.

The pump did not come on at first, when cranked, my wife cranked it and I had a stethoscope on the pump. So I jumped the terminal, and turned on ignition. Then the pump came on. So I disconnected the jumper wire and cranked it, then it came on. A few minutes later the sound was really loud.

The tank and fuel lines are pristine. I spent about 30 hours a few years ago dropping the tank and adding the red sealer., the cleaning every crevice, inside ,around and out. Im a clean freak. I know I have over 600 hours cleaning the car, engine, undercarriage, interior, every crevice. I can take a q-tip and run it over the entire car inside and out,and it will come out white.

what the rx-doctor said might be happening also, its pumping air.. the fuel tank probaly has about 1-2 gallons in it now. maybe the wrong size pump, coupled with an almost empty tank creates the noise.

well, merry christmas all, any more is info is appreciated. Ive looked thru a few threads on this forum and it seems to be a higher, more dedicated class than the second gen forums..

thanks all

have you checked your filter? mine was getting loud when my filter got clogged, just because it was having a hard time pumping. its either that or the air in the system i would say

Captain Lou 12-27-06 12:44 PM

My new pumps freakin loud as well. I posed a bit on it here:

My 'SE idles at 1100, dies at 2000 RPM

not my main problem, but its good to know its not all that unique.

mack123 12-27-06 07:12 PM

yeah I have a newer fuel filter so I think I can rule that out. Im kinda leaning towards that excess air is involved somehow, Im filling the tank up over the weekend, since I think it has maybe a gallon or even less.

Also, I think the pumps we get at the auto stores arent really specifically designed exactly for our cars, and they are substandard-compared to the stock ones. I checked at mazda today for the price of an OEM pump. They said 389.00
hahaha thats too much for me right now, etc, etc.

hey captain lou, is your gas cap good and tight ? I think I overlooked that also,if it makes any difference... might allow a huge air prob.

thanks all
