20B First Gen RX-7
G'day everyone,
Thought I'd post up some pics of my Series 3 RX-7 20B. Conversion is almost complete. Engine has been rebuilt and extend ported. I'm running it naturally aspirated as first, always been keen to know what a n/a 20B would put out and was like to drive. Plus can't beat the sound of n/a. The computer I'm using is a Microtech LTX12. Exhaust is custom extractors to just before the diff then into a 3" pipe then into a single straight through stainless SelectMaz 3" muffler. I'm still using the diff gears I was using with the bridge port, 4.4s Excuse the dirty engine bay. http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotar...els2-small.jpg Click here for above pic http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/wheels2.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/20b-small.jpg Click here for above pic http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/20b.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/2-small.jpg Click here for above pic http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/2.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/3-small.jpg Click here for above pic http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/3.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/4-small.jpg Click here for above pic http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/4.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotar...otor-small.jpg Click here for above pic http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/3rotor.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotar...ries-small.jpg Click here for above pic http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotar...ncilleries.jpg http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotar...take-small.jpg Click here for above pic http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotary20b/intake.jpg |

using an FB front cover? thats sick.

Exactly what I eventually want to do with mine. This begs many questions, including:
Which transmission are you using? How far back did the shift lever have to be moved? Can the slave cylinder still be changed out without lowering the trans or pulling the engine partially out? I'm not familiar with that differential. How does it compare strength-wise to stock? Any firewall modifications necessary? How difficult was it to get the 12A front mount to line up? Who about cost invested thus far? Again, very nice car and keep us posted re performance. |
aviator if u look, his front mounting system is custom, u can see the origional subframe a buncha inches back

Hopfully it will hold out a while. No modification to the firewall. Custom front cross member as shown below. http://members.optusnet.com.au/rotar...rossmember.jpg Cost.. around the 12k mark Australian ($9,000 USD) for engine, complete rebuild & porting, modifying of sump, new waterpump, computer, new S4 mounts, cross members, fuel pumps, radiator, gearbox, clutch, exhaust, thermo fan, modifying of gearbox, oil cooler, injectors cleaned, filters, oils, etc. complete. Thank you, will do :) |

awesome! let us know how it drives!
|
That's incredible. I want more info! How in God's name did you get that in there? Where's the tranny compared to where it normally is? Did you have to shorten the driveshaft? Is it a stock tranny?
Man, I wish I was in Australia.. you guys are nuts. MY kind of nuts! Jon |

Man, I wish I was in Australia.. you guys are nuts. MY kind of nuts! Jon Tailshaft is standard S3, part of the reason I decided to go with the 12A box first Yes, stock good cond. 12A Turbo gearbox. I was going to go a 13BT box, or a supra, but thought I'd give this a shot first, if it breaks I'll go either 13bt or supra. There's quite a few 20B in RXs over here. Think there's around 15 now, just in Brisbane. I was almost tempted to give up half way and go 13bt like everyone else, glad I didn't. |
So you've got the Diff, the tailshaft and the gearbox in *stock* location, and just attached the engine to it and figured out how to mount it?
That's awesome! There are *no* 20b's around here. Heck, I'd doubt if there were 15 on the continent! Jon |

Is that an RX-3 front mount on your front cover? I see you had to drill new holes.
Your S4 motor mounts are a little close together for that kind of torque. Any plans to install a torque brace? |

Perhaps there was some miscommunication. What is the mount that is bolted to the front cover? It resembles an RX-3 mount. It's what I used on my 20B. I think I will need a torque brace due to the narrow positioning of the motor mounts.

My friend wants me to help him do a 20B powered GSL-SE.
|
I wish I had never looked at this thread. Now I have to spend more money.

It looks like your MAP sensor is hooked to the IUM and the brake booster is connected to the LIM. Let us know how that works out for you.
By the way, I like that air filter. I'll have to get one like that. Do they come in orange? |

With the extend port, exhaust and ltx12 this engine should be making around the same hp |
Where are you going got mount your radiator fans? |

A completely stock port 20b engine without the turbos has made 232 rwhp. Hmmm not bad for a 2400 lb car. That's more than what a stock Fd puts down with twins turbos. :D |

I'm drooling all over at the thought. I grew up in Puerto Rico
where you see rotaries and mods all over, but I'm yet to see a 20B in a 1st gen. You guys are wicked, keep it up mate and thanks for sharing the info. and pictures. |
I agree with you on that Grewing in Puerto Rico seeing this cars all over I have never seen a FB with a 20B on a process. I would love to see one in person and hear to see how it sounds like. Anyone in Seattle with that kind of power? :D

I'm getting crazy ideas... Maybe shipping the car to Puerto Rico for that
kind of modification is not far fetched. I will end up saving tons of money in labor. Something to think about Latin Heat. You see what you're doing Rotary20B? Messing with peoples head... |
Yea I agree with you d. quinones. I will be having my Wedding up in Puerto Rico around 4-21-07 and while I am down there I will see if I can get in touch with a few Puertorican Rotory machanic and see. My fiance wants to move down there so, if I do end up doing that I will make sure to save alot of money and then take my car down there with me and do a major project on it. ;) Hopefully but I like your thinking attitude. :bigthumb:
|
Felicidades!! May your wedding bring many years of happiness for you
and your wife LatinHeat. I've been out of the loop for years in reference to mechanics in Puerto Rico. But I'll definitely let you know if I find out before you do. I'm in the military so I won't be able to settle down there for a while, but I'll be flying there often after I'm done with my deployment. Note: Apologies to Rotary20B, I know this is kind of out of the subject. But, as you can see, your thread has messed with 2 puertoricans who are planning to go back to the island, where things are caliente. |

We are doing up kit for crossmember etc if anyone is interested. Will cut down on the cost of a conversion quite a lot if getting a workshop to do it. |

so are you driving the car yet?
how is the torque? That is one of the main reason i wanna do that swap! :D |
His stock motor mount pads/pedestals are already removed like yours. I'd imagine your kit would be the next step. I'll talk to him in a few days and pass the info on to him.

For the person who asked about cooling, I did have a S3 radiator that was record and a twin core. Now have a triple core radiator and am running a single Davies Craig 16" thermo. The car should be finished in the next week, I will post some videos when it's completed. The car is being engineered so will be road legal over here, may take another week or so for that. |

These will be the last pics before it is running, just exhaust to complete now.
Made a few changes, new twin core radiator was replaced with a new triple core, and am running twin 10" fans instead of one large 16". This pic is of the new radiator, fans & oil cooler setup https://img320.imageshack.us/img320/...lers3ba.th.jpg Fuel setup (need to clean underneath up now) https://img315.imageshack.us/img315/...etup0iv.th.jpg Engine sitting in car finished https://img320.imageshack.us/img320/...nish7am.th.jpg And again.. https://img320.imageshack.us/img320/...ish27zk.th.jpg |
I have the same 3 row core radiator but my oil cooler was mounted in front due to lack of space. I mounted my fan on the back side of the rad. I had a 16" sitting around so I used that and shrouded the upper 2" and lower 2" that hangs over the core. I hope the oil cooler doesn't block air flow too much.
Any luck making those motor mount kits? I think my friend's GSL-SE project might need a kit. |
