1g auto-x'ers
I think I have found a dirt cheap 12a (85 GS) car to buy. I'm wanting to make a street/ autoX car. What are you guys running as far as set ups and how competitive are you. Im more interested in cars that are still street driven as well. Also, how many are autoXing without LSD? Pics welcome!

i'm just starting, but i'm going with something similar to kentetsu's setup. full respeed coilovers 275 150. tokico illuminas all around. will tell you how it is afterwards.
I've got a stock suspension and you can feel how bad it is. so i'll do a video once its done probably. maybe before and after? |
before and after would be awesome
|
Speak with Kentetsu
|
The stock suspension is actually quite good, IMO. Having an LSD is fun, but I don't think you'll see much benefit with one on the AutoX. That mainly helps with drifting.
|
I'm running
RB Springs KYB Shocks RB Swaybars front and rear RB Street Port Exhaust (complete) Sterling Carb on ported manifold ISC Racing Airbox with K&N Non go-fast mods: AWR Aluminum Rad FD Alt Open Diff with Drum Brakes and I still took third place in e-class in 2007 (didn't race 2k8 because of electrical issues)! I haven't had a chance to get on the track since I got my ReSpeed Rack and Pinion last year - can't wait! Jon |

I hope you're joking.
Of course I have no experience outside of my GSL so I could be wrong. |
What are people paying for sterling carbs and are they "plug and play"?
|
^Yeah, very much so. You'll need to change your fuel pump, but after that you shouldn't require much tuning.
You can find his pricing at www.sterlingmetalworks.com |

Whereas with drifting there is a huge difference. It would be a worth while mod otherwise, but if he is worrying about being competitive there are better things to be doing.

lsd adds so much more traction. I can totally feel it going up my gf hill in the rain. sure it will tend to kick the rear end out more, but i get tons more traction than my friend's open diff fc.
Too bad mine (LSD) is going out. The clutches are worn. will rebuild soon. it sucks when you can feel the clutches completely give out. |
Yeah, the whole open diff/ drum brake thing makes me want to reconsider the car Im looking at, steal or not.

Why FP and not SSM or SM2? Is it because the lack of the interior?

lsd maks a huge difference in autocross. Nothing is more frustrating than having that inside wheel spinning all the way through a big sweeper. Easier to kick the rear end out, but easier to control it also. It really ups the fun factor on the car.
You can usually find a complete rear end for around 3 hundred, and an evening or weekend will get it done, depending on how much time you spend cleaning it up, painting etc. Check out some of my videos if you want to see my setup (link in signature line). I think she's doing alright, I couldn't be happier with the handling and performance of the car now. Started out with the Racing Beat stuff, but later upgraded to the Respeed equipment. Would have saved myself a lot of time and money if I had just done it right the first time. Check out www.re-speed.com great people to deal with. Most of the information on my car is listed in my sig line, but if you have specific questions feel free to shoot me a PM. Sterling carbs, not sure on the going rate, but well worth the money and wait. Great customer service and after sale support. . |
OK, Im at home now and getting stoked again about the project. Kentetsu your videos get me excited about autox, even though ive never done it!
|
Autocross is great man! Where else can you go somewhere, borrow a helmet, pay 20 bucks, and drive your car like you stole it without the fear of cops hassling you. Not many ways you can screw up either. The worst you can do in a parking lot is spin out, and maybe put a flat spot on a tire. :)

Kentetsu can you post pics of your 13x8's on your car? i want to see how far they stick out past the fender :)
|
agreed i want to see the pics, first i thought you said video
