1983 Rx7 Issues

I am continuing to work on this car that has been sitting for 15 years and need some help. I have a couple of issues.

First: The fuel tank after removeing it is shot. I need to replace it. Where do i look to find a new one?

Second: I don't know what brand of carb this car has on it, any ideas?

Third: I took the carb apart and cleaned it out on an ultrasonic cleaner. Actually my neighbor did the work. We took the carb off which in itself is a pain in the butt to remove, because the carb would not pump gas. After it was cleaned out and put back together it still will not pump that much gas. It does some but not like it should. Any ideas? Accelerator pump? If so where do i need to find the parts for this at?
Am I running into an issue of replacing the carb???

Fourth: Where can I get a parts breakdown, diagram of the carb online to print out?

Thanks again for everyones help, I am hitting a brick wall here and getting really frustrated over this project.

This should have a breakdown, or at least some pics of what you have, assuming you have the Nikki stock carb installed

1. Junk yard or check out the 1st Gen For Sale Section of post an ad in Parts Wanted (although Junk Yard is best option, unless somebody lives close).
2. If it's stock it's called a Nikki
3. Rebuild kits are available from Autozone and many other auto parts stores. If you're lucky somebody will post the actual part #....I hear some are better than others.
4. READ THE FAQ SECTION!!!!! in there you can find a link to online Factory Service Manuals for your specific car as well as your carb.

Lastly read through the 1st Gen Archives.....you'll find a tremendous amount of useful information.
Lastly +1, learn how to use the search button.

Good luck and welcome

I found the online carb manual and I am printing it out. Anyone tried a radiator shop to have a tank coated?

I would start with maybe fuel pump to make sure it is pumping the appropriate amount of gas to the carburetor and check the filter to make sure there is the right amount of gas going to the carburetor for it to pump out, but you can get a rebuild kit at autozone that I have heard is very good for under $30. And well it seems most everyone has got it all covered.

I took the tank in my new car to have it dipped at a radiator shop and it worked great.

New tanks are NLA so you will need to have it reconditioned.

You can find almost all the manuals you need here:

http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php?page=rx7manual

The FSM is your bible for working on the car. Get the one for or closest to your year
and read it regularly.

If its been sitting for that long you need to clean out the tank, replace fuel filter, replace rubber lines to tank and do the same on the rubber lines to the carb.
Rebuild the carb, new plugs, new wires, make sure the grounds are all good, etc.

Don't forget that Sam from Respeed is finalizing the design on a replacement gas tank for us. :) Not sure how soon they might be available, but it doesn't sound like very long.

Do you have a link for respeed?

the carb has been rebuilt, it is getting some fuel but not very much. Fuel pump was replaced and is getting plenty of fuel to the carb. All the fuel lines are good. I have not replaced the wires, but did replace the plugs. The car was running for awhile until some bad gas hit the carb. I am running clean gas thru it now trying to get it started but she doesn't seem to be getting enough gas. I can add some gas in the carb and it runs fines, until the gas is gone. I have also checked floats and the levels are great, sight glass shows full.

I am going to take the tank into a radiator shop next week to have it coated. I am still at a loss as to why it won't run. I am going to pull plugs again blow out fuel and try a new set I have.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will keep plugging away.

Respeed = www.re-speed.com

Sight glass shows full = bad Both of the sight glasses (one on front, one on back) should show fuel at the halfway mark, not full.

If they are truly showing full, then the floats may be hung up...

Have the sight glass at about halfway now, car is still running a little rough though. I don't have the idle mix set correctly. Where is the idle screw located on this carb? I can find the mix screw on the drivers side but don't see the idle.

Jingkun 11-21-11 04:48 AM

Idle is slightly to the right of the mixture. It looks like a rounded philips head screw. Kinda weird, you'll know what it is when you see it, should be right above the shutter valve. Ah, and while the mixture screw is pointed kinda at a 45* angle to the engine the mixture should be parallel (or perpendicular, you pick).
