1983 GSL - 20BPP Build
Hello all,
I started this build 3 1/2 years ago, so I have a bunch of pictures and stories, but Its a short crank 3 rotor, built with new parts from Precision Engineering in New Zealand, they supply the E-Shaft, counterweights, centre plate (with bearing milled in), flywheel etc, the irons are s6 and the housings are new FD with 50mm Peripheral Ports installed. Rotors are FC high compression NA, and clearanced and then the whole rotating assembly was balanced to 0. And because a picture says 100 words lets see if i can upload some https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f0ca6c3f68.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...9f09b88a2e.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...20b2dd2d14.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...7c35a1159f.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8288a86a56.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...6297eaaada.jpg |
Wow! That’s my dream build.. looks awesome so far
|
why was this not posted in the build section?
|
Hi, Sorry I didn't look that far into it, happy if admin wants to move it.
I have more pictures, but there is a limit to posting on the threads. here are some more https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...0c1c885e70.png https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...24c2239c89.png https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...c029254964.png |
and more building the motor
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...60aa4f2d07.png this is the precision engineering centre plate that is supplied all machined up ready to go... im told these motors are good for 11,000rpm... not that i will every get to there. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5392015927.png https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e06b047ace.png slowly and carefully putting the sandwich together https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...84e1727bf7.png one big hamburger ready to go |
|
Okay it seems I cannot upload anymore pictures... I will try again later.
I did write up a bunch of stuff under the pictures but lost that all somehow |
nice! :icon_tup: what rear end are you going with?
|
Awesome build! what trans are you going to run? Ecu? did you get a weight of the block of the short crank 20b?
I'm searching for a nice SA shell to put my 20B PP in right now. Glad to see someone else exploring this, I'll be looking for updates. Matt |

Badarse. You'll have to post up skid vids when its ready.
|
Im running a 91 turbo trans, cut and shifted so the shifter comes up in the right spot, should handle 400hp okay
Rear end is stock LSD for run in purposes... I have a toyota hilux rear end with an ma70 supra clutch type LSD head, its a common swap for cars in Australia and New Zealand ECU is a Microtech lt16 with Can bus set up so I can run my guages on a tablet Weight of the motor alone i didnt weigh it, but the car weighs 1984.42 Lbps, or 900.12kg with the motor in and the interior out... A short crank is an e-shaft designed specifically to use a normal 13b iron as the intermediary iron instead of the mazda factory thick iron... it was developed at a time before all these after market guys got into CNC and wot not when mazda werent producing the replacement thick irons. Also it makes the motor shorter by 20mm or so, so better to fit in a tight engine bay.... I have to say its a good fit in the engine bay of the 83 lets try uploading some more pictures |
Still wont let me upload

Looking great! pretty awesome solution for the oil pan, I like the creativity.
|
Man this is like the ultimate FB goal, keep chugging along with it!
|
The want is too much. Dream build!! Keep at it.

Once the extractors were done the rest of the exhaust went on in no time at all. these are specialty rotary stainless packed units so they will last longer than the stock fibreglass units https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...755f466b89.png can see mt racingbeat suspension upgrades https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...eb95452485.png 2 v bands on a 3 inch thick wall mild steel pipe should in theory make it sound nice. But can always beef up the muffling in the mid section easily too |
very kool...

Ended up going to the easy option... https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...3f349100a5.png fuel cell!!! solves a bunch of issues in one go https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...b65e9cb5ff.png Buttoned up the oil lines, she should hold oil now :) |
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...db010557c3.png
Coolers look like they are in place and good to go https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...441a99ad00.png hydraulics all in place, just need filling and bleeding. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...312fa1fea6.png Almost all buttoned up and ready to start... once we sort the wiring out... |
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e77fbf24cc.jpg

Pulled the dash to find a home for the computer, that surge tank is actually a vacuum tank for the brake booster and fuel reg, its not in its final spot, but bolted up to see if it will fit behind the dash when I put it back in. Will also do a cleansing of the loom as there are a lot of wires that wont be needed anymore. Aircon is gone, cruise control is gone etc etc. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...795efd4956.jpg new shoes, got a cheap set and put on some cheap rubber, I dont expect the first set of tires to last too long, but also dont want anything sticky while running everything in, rather a tire slip than a clutch slip etc... after these wear out will go to a higher side wall and stickier rubber. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...71c8649c3e.jpg nice shot of the racing beat upgrades, Moog steering and wot not underneath |
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...3aa8e74324.jpg
Need to get the rear valence sorted out, there is a paintless dent removal guy coming to look at it while its on the hoist. but back end looking quite light https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...d821c683d0.jpg have taken the left front guard off to run the engine bay wiring up under the guard. can see the Right hand head light, indicator and light motor wiring here that needs to be extended and run around the front of the car... I was going to paint the car white but Havana Brown is really starting to appeal to me... I think Im going to go with a late 80's retro vibe with the looks of this car. |

This is exactly how I want to roll my car into caffine and classics (a Sunday morning hard park here in New Zealand)
|
My God that's nice work. And the first pic of the rims - "POP" even the wheels are killer. Inspirational.
|

It's been a while since i saw one of these engines. I like this build. Glad it's staying Havana Brown. :)

Stripping out the loom and making repairs on the fly (It has a rat or something chew through the rear harness at some point) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...4aad2ae9ce.jpg Dropped it down to see where it will sit on the new suspension... she is quite high... something to look at. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...7644b40f85.jpg This is the engine bay loom wiring tuck... im sure many of you know how this works, easiest bay to tuck I have ever played with |
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e5ee909195.jpg
More of the wiring tuck, this will obviously be covered by the guard and protected by the inner guard https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...bdc95d996e.jpg Wired the loom to a jump pack to test all the lights and indicators, pop up light motors etc. All work well :) now... https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...9f81a34d1d.jpg All the ignition leads made and installed now. |
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...b6ce38ad8b.jpg
Getting there... all takes time https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1b5f3db1a8.jpg Looking closely this is the Vacuum lines tapped into the manifold and plumbed back through the heater core holes into the vacuum tank. this will then feed the brake booster and the FPR. The computer vacuum will run directly off the throttle bodies, so a step back and 2 sideways to go forward. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...b8c4f3ae0d.jpg This is the wiring fix for what looked like a rats nest of crap https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...d718373e0c.jpg wiring to pump, and other lines all ready to place |
|
Video
Also, This happened boys and girls... we were testing the fuel line pressures for leaks, and the oil pressure had been previously checked... wasnt 100% about the wiring but as it turned out she fired... so in an impromptu early celebration we rolled it over under video to see if she would start, and what do you know... it is an angry sounding wee beasty :)
Enjoy... there will be more to come. |
Sounds great!
|
Sounds quality mate!
you boys love the pulse down there eh hahaha |
So much drool... nice work man!!

Took out the cross member to strengthen it up, gussets and wot not so it doesn't shake loose :) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...04f47d4fee.jpg Bit closer up before the paint goes on https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...0239b0a194.jpg Well it was sitting way too high for my liking (See "looked like a 4x4 on road tires) so I have pulled all the shocks and spring to get them compressed which maintaining the spring rate, so hopefully all the goodness of Racing beat research and track testing but at a ride height I like :) |
